To the holocaust denying trolls: you are disgusting.

Before the war, my great-grandfather took Hitler at his word (he had announced he was going to destroy the Jews), so he had organised shelters for himself and his offspring. His brothers, sisters and the rest of the family did not believe him. They were all killed during the war, most in Sobibor.

Bless his heart, he must have felt guilty. The guilt was not his, but of that murderous devil with the small mustache that brainwashed the boy.

Germany in the 1930ies and 40ies was led by Satan himself. It was working to create Hell on earth for all of humanity. It had to be stopped. Those same forces are still at work, creating division, fear and hatred everywhere. The nation that is most at danger right now, is the US itself.

@chrvsalism2102 This is absolutely true. Having Satan lead your country does not mean that every citizen is evil.

@goncalojesus7583 No, he organised for people to shelter them in their homes, and organised the paperwork to accompany them so it all seemed legit. He himself lived at a campground, he sent my grandmother & father to a farmer in a small village in the middle of nowhere, and so on. There were some bunker-type places where people were sheltered in forests, but the vast majority of those who survived the war found shelter in homes. A good read about that time is the book "The Hiding Place" by Corrie van der Boom. Gives a good impression of what was involved.

@LockheedC-130HerculesOfficial It means that the branch of the family @latinamajor belongs to left Germany before the war, and after the war nobody was left of those that had stayed behind. My family also has surviving branches in the 'States and South Africa that left before the war, while in Europe only the branch that went into hiding on time, survived.

Most of these people were mere robots on the brink of death. The predominant emotion would have been fear. Don't expect people weeping in gratitude when you liberate a camp like this. Expect people to avoid or ignore you. And expect to need to direct these people: they are no longer capable of independent decision making. And if they make decisions, they would invariably be bad decisions. Like wanting to wander out into the woods, without food or adequate clothing, and disappear. These people were traumatised in a way we can't imagine. PTSD doesn't come close. But with time, most were able to heal and live relatively happy and productive lives.

I believe this. Whether those Germans actually did not know, or did not want to know is up for debate. There are many such uncomfortable truths, even in "civilized" nations. Like the way illegal immigrants are treated in the USA, or the cruelties of bio-industry...

@solofox6925 "taking the government at it's word" No-one is taking the government at its word. There is an enormous wealth of historic evidence about WW2, that leaves no room to deny (or "debate") what happened.

@justinmccurdy9319 "Who said anything about unfettered capitalism?" You entered this discussion when someone argued in favor of Universal Mental Health Care, which is a current topic. Democrats want to provide this, Republicans don't. So, obviously you side with the Republicans. You also side with Republicans on the "trickle-down" myth. Then to suddenly turn around and argue against unfettered capitalism is a bit disingenuous. You can argue against over-taxation all you like, and still be completely irrelevant as the USA is currently being UNDER-taxed, especially for the rich who barely pay any taxes at all. Like your ex-president, who payed, what was it, $750 one year and zero in most others for a decade? To defend that is completely crazy. No-one is talking about over-taxing the rich, only about making them pay their fair share into the country that gives them so many advantages.

I hope you are referring to the MAGAts, 'cause they show some real fascist tendencies these days.

@hendrikusscherphof7348 Very true. The Nazis were not just brutal to the Jews and the nations they conquered. Theirs was a true police state, and they ruled through fear. I classed people subdued by this fear and brutality under the category "Didn't want to know". They did not want to know these things out of self-preservation.

Smells are the most powerful way to trigger memories. I can imagine the trip was spoiled for the poor man. God bless him.

@justinmccurdy9319 "especially for a country as large as ours." You mean "with as many loons as ours". You should have a look at e.g. France. They have universal health care including mental health, and they pay (per capita) about half of what you pay for health care.

@justinmccurdy9319 "I advise you to come up with an actual argument if you want me to take you seriously" @Orc Lover made a perfectly valid point that you did not address. I am also shocked and abhorred that people in the USA need to chose between a). do I potentially bankrupt myself and my family, or b). do I call 911 because of this heart-attack I am experiencing. It is not right. You can argue all you want, but that still does not make it right. And you know it. "The lust of money is the root of all evil".

@nathanjones6638 Hate of the Germans was not the answer. It was the mercy that was extended to Germany by the west and later the east that broke the cycle of war. "Mercy triumphs over judgement" <ADDITION>: Another key was that the Germans owned up to the evils they perpetrated. Repentance is a prerequisite to mercy and healing.

@gregkelmis2435 The GOP is currently employing Nazi tactics, namely in demonizing democrats and constantly lying on their propaganda channel Fox "News". You can recognize Nazi tactics in that they spread unfounded fears about the other party, and that they promote their leader as the solution to it all, without explaining how they will do that. Democrats do not do those things, but the GOP does. PLEASE educate yourself on the characteristics of fascism. You are currently being used as a tool.

@Spade_1917 I thought so. These idiots think that the Law only applies to others. That it is OK to violently storm the Capitol because their Great Leader said so, but not OK to peacefully protest inequality. Pathetic.
1
@MsckMatt "things happening in america are nothing like these camps" ...YET. The GOP is currently using the same playbook as the NSDAP in the early 30ies. They create a political enemy in the Democrats that they want to fight violently, like the NSDAP did with "communists" then. The GOP creates fear for immigrants like the NSDAP for Jews. They worship their strong "savior" like the NSDAP did Hitler. They teach people that they are being robbed of their rightful place by some enemy, like the NSDAP did. And they promise that their leader is going to give them back their rightful place. While the GOP does no organised genocide like in WW2, it is a fascist party, and could potentially follow the path to a similar conclusion.

Hate is not the answer. But it is understandable.

I do not condone the revenge killings. But I would also find it hard not to take matters in my own hands after being confronted with such indescribable evil. I would not be able to condemn those who did, but perhaps offer them psychological support. "Let he who is without sin..."

@johnkoster462 Yes, the gratitude is there. But also there is worry that the US is returning to its pre-war isolationist stance that encouraged the Nazis to start the war in the first place.
