  1. Personally, I think this is not all bad. It means that most likely, the next GE will not be a free one, and that the Tories will remain in power after 2024. That means that they will be the only ones responsible for the continued collapse of the UK. For me, a worst-case scenario would be that Labour wins the next GE, gets blamed for the Brexit fall-out, to have Tories back in power after them without any reform in the UK. But now it is overwhelmingly clear that the UK is no longer a democracy, and who are to blame for that. It is obvious that reform is necessary, and it will happen at the earliest opportunity. My advice to Labour would be to boycott Parliament, like Sinn Fein does. Start as soon as the new session of Parliament starts. It is no use continuing to play along with the Tory's game. The UK is no longer a democracy, and Labour needs to act accordingly.

  2. I find the marginalisation of the Courts the worst of these attacks on Democracy. The Rule of Law is a fundamental part of civilization, far, far older than democracy. But now the Tory government has placed itself above the Law -- as long as their MPs don't disagree. It now has the right to outright ignore court rulings for up to a year. It also makes it impossible for the Courts to challenge any further anti-democratic laws. For instance, with this law, the government can just ignore the statutory limits to how long a parliament can sit. They can just introduce a law that says the next election will be in 2035. There is no way to stop them if they do. Even were the HoL to vote the bill down, the government could just sign it into law anyway.
