  2. Claiming the inheritance of Rome has been a thread in European history. All those troubles the various Frankish factions went through to claim the title, the Catholic church somehow claiming the right to select the Emperor, the Hapsburgs, the Spanish, Napoleon claiming the title, and now Il Duce and the Third Reich. One has to fear the EU will at some point claim itself to be its successor as well, but that will be some time in the future. Most of the times, it did not end well.

  4. Yeah, the cold war was a scary period, inconceivable by people who did not live through it. Thank God it is over. Let's keep it that way. We lived a few miles from a military airbase, and knew that if shit hit the fan, we were going to be toast in minutes.

  10. Great story! The union of the European Nations is probably the greatest political miracle of the modern age. It is very easy to break something apart, but to glue disparate nations together into an ever-stronger unity, is extremely difficult and demonstrates incredible wisdom and foresight on the side of those who initiated it.

Though the Dutch did mount a serious effort to pacify the nation, we recognised that there was little real gain to be had by fighting until the end, and chose to separate on good terms. The Dutch have always had good relations with the Indonesian republic after that: my grandfather moved over there right after the war (1950ies), which my father remembered as a golden period. Continuing the fight would have made things much worse. It is a shame however for the indigenous Christians that fought on the Dutch side, such as the people from Maluku. Things did not go well for them, Christians are still persecuted in Indonesia...

  13. If you talk about the Britons, yes these were a different people than the Normans / Angles / Saxons. But there were strong racial connections between the Saxons, Angles and the Normans / Vikings. All coastal North-Sea regions were strongly connected. Not all Vikings left after they raided, and they did more than just raid. There was a lot of trading going on as well, and the various peoples intermixed. Which is why they all speak similar languages (Germanic).

If you go back to the Bronze age - early Iron age, the peoples of Europe are even more connected than the North-Sea peoples of the dark ages. The Celtic peoples were closely linked from Ireland to Turkey, and major trade routes spread British Tin all over the continent, in exchange for e.g. Mediterranean wine. Nations are a recent invention. All throughout time, people have been much more mobile than we give them credit for. Except for a single class during a short period (serfs being part of the land in the Feodal system). But even then, e.g. traders, monks, soldiers (mercenaries) and artisans traveled all over the continent, and all over the seas. In fact, sea travel was preferred over land travel because it was safer and easier. So, Britain being an island was no obstacle at all to intermingling with the people of the continent. Hell, fit people can even swim across the channel. I am so glad these ultra-nationalist fantasies of British exceptionalism are being thoroughly thrashed by research.

  20. Relations between Soviets and the West were extremely bad then. You literally could not trust a single word the Soviets uttered. They were literally always either lying outright or just telling what they wanted you to believe. At best, you could try to draw conclusions from what they did not say. That is not an environment conducive to diplomacy.

  22. ​ @AyoubBerrahel  You have strange ideas about Christianity. There is little difference between a Caliph and a Pope: both are fallible men that hold temporal power. The difference is that the Pope is expected to guide his followers in spiritual matters through teaching. There was a period in time that the Popes claimed undue spiritual authority, but that is no more. Their words, while considered important, no longer have the same authority as Holy Scripture. The key difference between Christianity and Islam is that Christians do not consider Jesus a mere prophet, but God himself having come to earth to live as a man, to do for us what we could not do ourselves.

  25. Excellent video! The whole abortion debate is the typical red herring populists use to gain power. For Hitler, it was the Jewish scheme to oppress the German People. For the Republicans, it is Abortion that would earn the USA God's wrath. As appropriate, the whole issue has been surrounded by fear and emotion, referring to "baby killers" etc, and many un-truths -- like the ones you pointed out. However, even more fundamentally, it is not Biblical to condemn the practice of Abortion. There are only a few references to abortion in the Bible, the clearest is one where a pregnant woman is abused so as to loose the fetus. That is treated as an economic crime instead of homicide. Also waiting with the naming & circumcision ritual until the 8th day after birth indicated that a baby is not recognized as a person until that day. The Jewish People inferred from this that abortion is permitted under Biblical Law. So, people who claim that God's wrath is coming because of abortion, or denounce those in favour of a woman's right to choose as "evil demons" are on very shaky theological ground. One might even call it shifting sands.

It is unreasonable because there are NO communists in the USA that are a threat to anyone. Fascism is a MUCH greater threat there, at the moment. As it was in the Weimar republic. Hyperinflation won't happen in the majority of the world, only in mis-managed countries like the UK, Turkey, Venezuela I see that happening within the foreseeable future.

  32. The people of long ago were much smarter than we give them credit for. In fact, they were almost as smart as we are today. People have been studying gestation since long before the dawn of time. That abortions were likened to "coughing up blood" refers to its legal status, not that they thought the mechanisms were the same. The founding fathers will have been well aware that pregnancy starts with the insertion of a male part into the female's, not by some miracle where, hey presto, a baby appears. They would have seen feti and perhaps even embryo's in hunted and slaughtered animals. The people who wrote down that story about the bear cub will have known it to be nonsense, perhaps a funny story to tell children. In the case of abortion, "They didn't know any better" than to allow abortions does not hold water.

  36. Interesting point! The Normans had not been long in France before 1066 (only 150 years). My bet is that most were bi-lingual, with many maintaining links to their roots in the North, if not making regular visits & exchanges. Normans / Vikings did more than raid, they also traded a lot.

The UK is becoming more and more English-centered, with Westminster ONLY operating in the interest of the English. If you want to stop Welsh (and Scottish) nationalism, deal with that first. But instead nationalist sentiments have been fueled in order to get support for Brexit. That is a double-edged sword. By encouraging nationalism, the Brexiteers have put in motion the dissolution of the UK.

Just to mention a few: Canetti, Fleming, Dirac, Hayek, Ishiguro, Kao, Katz, etc, etc, etc. If you wanna argue about "Fleming" being British, that name literally means "From Flanders" (modern Belgium).

Interesting struggles with the French, English, Germans, Dutch and of course the Swiss, lots of controversy but also charity such as the hospice of Beaune, patreonage of the arts, renaissance, the beginnings of nationalism, struggles of cities with their Burgers over Feudal Lords and their allegiances.

  45. The "English" did not speak English, as that had not been created yet. They spoke Germanic languages, probably in various dialects, and were probably multi-lingual to facilitate trade, and by old folk teaching their grandchildren the language of the place of their origin.

  46. Stagnation is not necessarily bad. The only reason stagnation is considered a dirty word is because much of our economic systems are based on inflation -- i.e. growth. Without inflation and growth, speculation is doomed to loose money. As speculation does not contribute anything, I would consider that a good thing. Investment is not the same as speculation, real investment is a good thing. Using shares to gather dividends, not to sell them them when their "value" has risen.

  52. The principle of a Rules-based world order is in agreement with the Bible, the "divine right to rule" is not. The Bible says in Psalms 138:2 that God exalted his Word above all of his Name. That means that even God can not deviate from the rules (the Word) he has specified. In the Bible, when taking about Gods Word that is equivalent with the Law -- a set of rules expressed as words that are binding. If God subjects Himself to the Law, so should all mankind -- including its rulers. NO-ONE is above the Law. Jesus confirmed this interpretation when He said in John 10:35 "Gods Word can not be broken" -- even God can not break the Law (His Word). To abstract these to a "social contract" is fine with me. In the end, it still boils down to the 10 commandments: "do not do murder, do not steal, do not envy, etc, etc", nicely summarized in the Golden Rule: do to others as you would have them do to you (Luke 6:31).

  55. The foundation of the EU is economic co-operation. Basically it is a classic Win-Win situations for all parties involved. And by intertwining the national economies, it makes a war both very costly and unlikely as you are not inclined to shoot at your suppliers & customers. Biting the hand that feeds you etc. I do believe the EU needs a military component, but only to defend its interests internationally. Especially against states that would try to bully the EU, like the USA, China and Russia -- though the threat from Russia is much smaller than Russia makes us believe.

  56.  @akosbarati2239  I would still argue that the threat Russia poses to the EU is much smaller than Russia would have us believe. The Ukrainians have demonstrated that quite clearly. It is only those pesky nuclear weapons... But I do not believe that the people in the chain of command will allow those to be fired over Ukraine. Because if they did, it would be the end of Russia. No-one would support them any more, including China and India. The West would quickly mop-up the Russian troops in Ukraine, build a wall around Russia, and check what had happened after a few years.

Trust me, he is not going to launch nuclear weapons just because we are thwarting him in Ukraine, if he knows that NATO will reply in kind whenever nuclear weapons are used. The fundamental question is, is freedom worth fighting for. If it is, we MUST challenge Putin's bluff. Because otherwise he and his successors will not stop at taking over Ukraine, the Baltic states, Poland, Germany, etc, etc, etc. China will take Taiwan, parts of Japan, etc, etc, etc. All because they discover that nuclear blackmail works, that MAD is no longer assured. Unless we want the whole world to become slaves, and e.g. the USA being invaded, Putler must be confronted at some point. It is wiser to confront him NOW, before millions of people have become slaves. Because if we give in to nuclear blackmail once, it will be harder to convince Putin that "this time we really mean it: don't invade Germany or else...". In fact, giving in to nuclear blackmail once, makes it much more likely that in future there will be an actual nuclear war. This really is a situation where NATO must be ready to retaliate for any use of nuclear weapons, in any form.

  59. I never thought I would see the day that muslims would compare themselves to jews... Muslim persecution is a bit more complicated than the persecution of Jews, because usually muslim militants are active in regions where they are also persecuted. Who started the violence is hidden in the shrouds of history, but it is clear that these militants are supported by the peaceful majority (voluntary or not), which is the reason for the persecution. It is bad to let the many suffer for the few, but it is not comparable to the situation of the jews in the 30ies and 40ies.

  60. Well done explaining how complex it is to join into another's war. There are far too many people taking out their frustration with what is going on in Ukraine out on their governments. War is probably the second most complex issue for humanity to struggle with, after climate change. I pray for much wisdom for the leaders of the nations today.
