And thus the arms race was born...

@unnamedchannel1237 Especially for those on pilgrimage, such arrangements existed. That is one reason for the famous pilgrim routes crossing Europe. That and other churches wanting a part of the business ;-) And monasteries often fed anyone who asked, and gave them a place to sleep.

@greatwallofno3533 Nah. These guys just make you think the plot is about person a when in fact it was about person b, and all this stuff about person a is just prelude (or even just filling to sell more books).

While all you say is true, life in any period except the modern one would fit the "grim and horrible" description. Most of us westerners are currently living in luxury unavailable to kings and queens even 150 years ago.

The shock would not have been as great as someone getting off an airplane in a different climate than where he took off. Everyday the environment would change a little bit, and the person would have had time to get used to them gradually, changes introduced one by one instead of all at once. Constantinople would not have been as overwhelming if you had first to go through London to get there, then if you got there straight from Brightwalton Green.

I was waiting for the rope to snap. You don't run ropes under tension over a square bit of steel (just below the windlass).
