If Cortez was not lying, he could just have promised the interviewer to provide the proof of his statement within a suitable period. When two parties make an agreement, and one party denies the agreement was made, the only way forward is for the other party to provide the proof that the agreement was indeed made, and nail the one party for reneging on it. If the other party does not provide such proof, then the agreement was indeed never made. So what the journalist asks for is perfectly normal, and Cortez demonstrates his mendacity by taking offence and attacking the interviewer instead of simply and quietly providing the proof.
