  1. Exactly. You can only have a "back end" when there is also a "front end". With embedded or systems work, there is no front end. They are an end to themselves. We call ourselves embedded or firmware developers, or hackers. In spite of the media that consistently misuse the term. Including Aaron.

  3. One reason why e.g. embedded development is paid relatively badly is because their work is always seen as a sunk cost by the bean counters. Whereas frontend development is a running cost for a company's primary process. And because our work is much more fun than the other types of work. It has its own satisfaction to create a new device.

  5. The area of "embedded development" is extremely varied. There is overlap with most other fields, esp. data analysis, AI, UI design, etc, etc, etc. There are plenty of PhD's writing embedded software. E.g. developing new ways for people to interact with systems. Or making roving robots intelligent. If you think AI is hard on a huge server, try doing AI on a $5 chip.
