  2. The history of C is absolutely amazing. They wrote the book in 1977 in the USA, and in 1983 or 84 I came across the language as a random schoolkid with a ZX-Spectrum in the Netherlands. In the days before the internet that is astounding success.

  3. For those who have never worked with them, the original TTYs were very different from any other type of user interface. It consisted of a type writer where the printing and the keyboard are disconnected. You talk to the computer using the keyboard, and the computer talks back by printing stuff. This was usually chained paper, i.e. the result would not be loose sheets but a long scroll that could be folded. One of the main differences is that this automatically logs your interactions with the computer. Everything is stored right there on the paper. This means that e.g. text editors did not have to provide the whole context of a file, allow scrolling etc. Because you can print the file once and physically scroll back to it on the paper scroll produced by the printer.
