  1. Assigning everything archeologists can't explain to "rituals" or "religion" is a sign of a lack of imagination. Your suggestion that e.g. those small figurines with hierarchies are associated with a chess-like game sounds much more plausible. However, the existence of such stratified figurines, does strongly suggest a stratified civilisation that knows hierarchy. Which is (as I have been told) the one true mark of a Civilisation. Fascinating stuff, as usual!
