"I will sacrifice anything for the people of Russia" I have never before seen a more brazen application for the Presidency of Russia.
2
My prediction about the future of Russia: Putin will be replaced by another dictator, but that will trigger a power struggle within the Russian leadership, and the various republics within Russia will start to protest and break away. Putin's war will be the end of the Russian Empire.
2
The de-russification of Ukraine has been guaranteed. There can be no peace between Russians and Ukrainians after Bucha and Mariupol, let alone their more recent war crimes. I am sure the Ukrainians will be tolerant towards people of Russian ethnicity who have lived in Ukraine a long time, but they will have to become Ukrainians. I don't think speaking Russian will be tolerated in Ukraine anymore. Putin, through his foolish & barbaric invasion, has caused that which he said he tried to prevent.
2
Putin is in a panic. He is pulling all the stops to try and prevent Ukraine aid. And Republicans are betraying everything they say they believe in.
2
Freedom of speech is only an issue in countries that have the Rule of Law. As the MAGAts want to do away with the Rule of Law, their opinion does not count. In fact, it should be a sign that Telegram is valuable for those who undermine the Rule of Law.
2
Russians are mad. Instead of breaking the Ukrainian spirit, they are engraving a deep, deep hatred against Russia into the Ukrainian spirit that will last for two generations at least.
2
"How often have you been invaded" What a weird question. And the answer is simple: ONCE, IN 1066. Great Britain has never been invaded militarily since then. Though we can debate whether 1066 was a proper invasion, as William the Conqueror did have a claim to the English throne.
2
Good idea not providing refuge to a Russian escaping conscription. Let them take up arms against Putin instead of running away, bloody cowards. They should learn from how Ukraine deals with dictators.
2
Nadezhdin is right when he says the Ukrainians are Russians. But he is mistaken if he considers himself a Russian. Russia is the region in western Ukraine around Lviv. The region around Moscow is properly called Moskovia. Some Tsar appropriated the name Russia in the 18th century (he also called himself the Tsar of Germany), but many maps kept the ancient names until well into the 19th century. When this war is over, we should correct this delusion of grandeur and restore the proper names.
2
Thank you for reminding us all of the lies coming out of Lavrov & Putin's mouths before the invasion. This infamy by itself should be enough to NEVER AGAIN negotiate with Russia until they repent of this war. Retreating is not enough, they must acknowledge that this invasion was WRONG and make reparations. Until then, NO DEAL.
2
I sooo look forward to a period in which Putin's regime no longer interferes in our politics! I will be boring, but I so long for it.
2
I am so disgusted with the American People. I will not accept any excuses. They either voted for Republicans even when they knew what type of people they are, or they didn't confront the stupid ideas of those who vote Republican strongly enough.
2
I am outraged by the US betrayal of Ukraine. Shame, Americans. Shame on you. This will not be forgotten. And don't dare to say "that is not us, those are the MAGAts". There is much Biden & the Democrats could have done to break through this Maga blockade, including prosecuting the MAGA congress-people for their complicity in the 6-1 insurrection and other crimes. Democrats still play this game with their gloves on, and Ukraine is suffering as a result.
2
@TheAmericanDreamLives The spell that Fox has over its marks is weakening. More and more are waking up to the fact that it is lying to them. But sadly, the spell is still quite strong -- witness the large number of marks that still support Trump. In most democracies, Fox would have been banned long ago (in many, it is). Media companies should not have a license to lie. The USA has taken the right of free speech too far. It should not cover huge companies, it is intended to protect individuals.
2
7:42 "They legally annexed the territory": NO, they annexed it illegally. They did adopt some laws that permitted them to do this according to Russian law. However, Ukraine still has jurisdiction there according to international law, so these laws are not worth the paper they are printed on.
2
The Stalin worship in Russia really amazes me. Don't they remember the dark days of his rule of terror? Stalin caused more Russian deaths than Hitler. Stalin made a pact with Hitler in 1939. The Russian army did so badly in 1941 because Stalin had murdered all good officers. And Stalin caused the Holodomor genocide in Ukraine.
2
Nice of the Economist to put the blame with Europe, while the USA is also VERY slow in giving Ukraine what it needs. If not for the USA, F16s would have been given to Ukraine at least 6 months earlier. But as you say, Ukraine is wipping Russian but all over the front line, trading tiny bits of worthless land for mountains of Russian dead.
2
@Duke_Romilar_III In my country, the vast majority of the damage done by the war was repaired before 1958: the rebuilding years. It seems to have been a wonderful time of hope and optimism (I wasn't alive back then).
2
Shoigu saying "we have no other option" is deeply offensive. When he stands before the ICC (or God, if he doesn't survive coming the regime change), the Judge will put those words to the lie.
2
That these billionaires chose the sides of dictators make them a danger to the People. Also, in the social media we see a war between the billionaires and people who value (real) freedom. The big war of our age will be to retain our democracies, and the enemy will be the ultra-rich. In the USA, the rich are winning at the moment, but recent events are helping to turn that tide. Note: I am all for private riches. But when billionaires use their power to mis-inform people to get them to vote against their own interest, and pressure governments to drop support for Ukraine, they have crossed the line and made themselves enemies.
2
"This is why Musk bought Twitter" That, and to flood the nation with ultra-right misinformation come election time. Expect to see MUCH more misinformation than in 2016 during this year.
2
Love the ET meme!
2
The thing that clinched the question whether this were infiltration attacks or ATACMS rockets, was that that airfield was attacked during daylight. No way that a commando team would try that during daylight.
2
Moscow Mike is the very definition of what the Bible calls a Wolf in Sheep's clothing.
2
That Russia is withdrawing its troops from NATO border puts the lie to their nuclear threats. Because Russia can be damned certain that if it explodes a nuclear weapon on NATO soil, NATO will invade it and decapitate Russian leadership all the way to Moscow. Prigozhin has shown it can be done, easily. In spite of all the rethoric, Putin knows he has nothing to fear from NATO as long as he doesn't attack us first.
2
"You have to have military allies for it to be a world war" That is a great comment! That one needs to be on T-shirts.
2
Rodents burrowing can definitely have caused the dam to collapse. Not mice, but more likely the Muskrat Ondatra zibethicus -- an invasive species from the Americas. These need to be actively hunted / trapped to keep them from undermining dams, and the damage they do needs to be repaired.
2
Russia performing acts of piracy on the Black Sea makes me very angry. NATO should start policing it.
2
The Republican party is corrupted through and through. And Moscow Mitch has long been working to corrupt the Judicial, so this corruption is not punished as it should be. The USA has a long process of de-corrupting ahead of it. And some Americans claim they will not help Ukraine because it is too corrupt... Projection is all these cowards have.
2
@JensPeterLiljegren bs yourself. The two buildings are not part of a compound. Just two separate buildings standing by a public road. There is gating around the embassy, but that does not include the consulate.
2
@JensPeterLiljegren Terminology is important, my friend. A diplomatic mission includes both embassies and consulates. The Embassy is legally considered a piece of Iranian (in this case) land, and an attack on it is an act of war. A consulate does not have that special status. So, IF Israel did this attack, they attacked a piece of Syrian ground where a number of terrorists were meeting with some officials from the Iranian army. Not with diplomats (diplomats also have special protection). Just like Israel has done dozens of times already (except that the generals were Iranian).
2
@JensPeterLiljegren I checked, the special protection afforded a diplomatic mission only applies to the receiving state of the mission. So, the Geneva Convention prevents Syria from attacking the embassy, but it does NOT forbid Israel from attacking an embassy in another nation. It is Syria's job to protect the mission, not Israel's. You were right about a consulate being part of the mission, but wrong about it being illegal for Israel to attack the mission in Syria. There is no mention of the diplomatic mission in the Geneva convention about conduct during times of war. An embassy does NOT have the same protection e.g. a hospital has. Which is why at the outbreak of war, diplomats usually leave a country. And even a hospital loses its protection as soon as it is used by enemy combatants. There were enemy combatants present in the consulate, which made it a valid military target from Israel's point of view.

Great point about Loss Aversion. Which is why we should switch the narrative not to what it costs, but what it benefits the West -- in particular the USA. Benefits of Ukraine beating Russia include: * No renewal of the Cold War * Prevents nuclear proliferation (if Russia wins, all nations will want nukes) * Preempts the Russian invasion of the Baltics and other East-European nations. * Shows China there is nothing to gain in invading Taiwan, and a lot to loose. * Enormous boost of American arms sales (already achieved). * Stability in the world food supply. * Creation of a strong, rapidly developing economy that will be indebted to the USA, and will want to repay that debt. * Reduction of the corrupting influence of Russian money in US politics. * Return to Rule-Based International Relations and international stability, which is good for trade. And we can go on a very long time.
2
Solovyev is a marked man for terrorising the world.
2
The Russian queen of lies must realize that if Russia were ever to use its nukes in an aggressive attack, that would be the end of Russia. MAD is still a thing.
2
The forced conscription of the men from Donetsk is genocide. The Russian people will discover what it means to reap and to sow. Probably, there will be a long period of violent civil war on Russian territory after this, to restore the balance of the Universe. Meanwhile, Ukraine will be rebuilt and prosper.

The USA has by far the largest military-industrial complex. Most EU countries have no military industry anymore, military supply companies having gone out of business due to competition from US companies. The past 30 years, European governments though the military industry no longer was a priority that required government intervention to preserve these companies. So to complain that the EU could be doing more is true in part, but most of our military industry is already producing as fast as it can. And why invest if US companies are going to flood the market soon anyway, when this war is over? But things are (slowly) changing. The EU is making a strategic decision not to depend on the USA anymore. That will mean the USA will get some formidable competitors in the weapons market, and will be hit economically as a result.

I think that Putin has started to realise that by helping Trump get to power, he made Trump much more powerful than himself. They no longer need Putin, nor do they have anything to fear from Putin. They are beyond his reach now. Perhaps he bet on Trump being too dense to turn against his former master, but i suspect that Maga is now waking up to the same fact. Whatever Poetin formerly used to control Maga (money and/or information) has lost its hold.
1
Awesome clip by that Dagestan man. This is how the Russian federation will collapse: the other federations will stop sacrificing everything so that they can live the good life in Moscow.
1
Seconded! 75% van Nederland staat achter Oekraïne.
1
When this war is over, the world will start hunting down Wagner as a terrorist organisation.
1
Russia knows that the only thing they can use nukes for, is to threaten other nations. This is the reason we can not give in to it, or all non-nuclear nations will lose their freedom.
1
Russians are completely blind that when they are upset about Trump threatening them, what they have been doing these past 3 years is way, way worse. Seems they don't understand the fundamental rule of Humanity: Do to others as you would have them do to you. Russia needs to dissolve.
1
Zelensky (and all of the western world) should dangle the bait of a Nobel Peace Prize in front of Trump. That is something he is sensitive to. And seriously, if he succeeds in letting Russia back down and withdraw from Ukraine, he will truly deserve that prize. This is his best bet to get it.
1
I am pretty left-wing (not an extremist though), and I fully support the war in Ukraine. Russia is seeking to enslave the Ukrainians, and they have every right to defend themselves against them. Most nations have had to fight tyranny in their history, once or several times, in order to become and stay free. Most nations have had help from other nations during those struggles. Such as the Americans who got help from the French and Dutch during their war of independence, and the English who got help from the Dutch in their fight against the Spanish Armada. We should all support Ukraine, in the hope of not having to repeat that fight ourselves if Ukraine falls. "Together we Stand, Alone we Fall".

I can't stand watching Olga S. She is dead inside and it shows in her eyes and facial expressions.
1
These idiots know that their lives are forfeit if they nuke Yellowstone to trigger a supervolcano, right?
1
That one remark by Dump has permanently damaged US prestige and interests all over the world. Europe will no longer rely on the USA for their supply of military hardware. This will hurt the USA like you can't imagine. This one remark has undone all the free advertisement from the great performance of US weapons in Ukraine.
1
Historically, Medvedev is absolutely right in saying that Ukraine is Russia. However, he is very wrong in supposing that he is also in Russia. Historically, he is in Muskovy, and his empire should be called Muskovy. But aside from that, his speech does announce their intention to do genocide, and they must be stopped.
1
"There has not been a war between Nato members in 80 years" There has been at least 1 "special military mission". Remember Cyprus, where Turkey and Greece fought each other? There are still the occasional confrontations between the two.
