  3. I sure wish more American leaders understood the urgency and importance of what is happening in Ukraine right now. If left to fester as it currently is, it will dominate world history for the next 10 years. And the current politicians will only be remembered for what they failed to prevent, like Chamberlain and the "isolationists" in the US. Using hindsight, it is easy to predict that this will escalate just like the previous 2 times the USA became isolationist in the face of growing international tension aimed against its allies. History repeats itself if you fail to learn its lessons.

  4. Stripping Hungary of its voting rights is difficult, because there is no legal framework to do so. The EU is a federation like the USA, except that the member states are absolutely sovereign. The EU has no authority over any member state, and work only gets done with the agreement of each member state. Several EU members have been pushing towards more authority for the EU, for instance to allow decisions to be taken by a majority of states instead of unanimously, which members than would be required to follow. Other member states have been strongly against that. Stripping Hungary of its voting rights would mean a radical step towards more authority for the EU. Such a step would, ironically, require the agreement of Hungary. This is why the EU is politically weak, while it is economically very strong. For this reason, some believe that the feet of mixed iron and clay that Daniel saw in his vision in the Bible, belonging to the statue of the empires of the future, represent the EU. But this shouldn't matter too much. The reason aid through the EU is better than individual member states is because of the ECB, which could manage large sums of money given to Ukraine better than member states. Also it allows member states to hide anonymously behind "The EU" and not risk being targeted directly by Putin.

The FSB is a specialist in infiltration, agitation, false-flag operations etc. In this case, I believe the FSB had prior knowledge of the attack, and purposefully did nothing to prevent it and kept other first-responders away. That is the easiest explanation for all the details we know, and according to Occam's Razor, thus the most likely.

Just the difference in morale, by itself, means that when the Ukrainians apply serious pressure the Russian defense will collapse. These terrorized Russians are more than likely to shoot their own officers if they try to stop a retreat. There have been far too many "experts" predicting that the war would last a week, that they wouldn't be able to keep Odessa, or that there would be a stalemate a year ago, or that they couldn't possible take Kherson, etc, etc, etc. They were wrong all the time. And they are wrong now as well. This war will have two possible outcomes: a total defeat of the Russians, or a total defeat of the Ukrainians. Those who argue for negotiations and cease-fire at the current lines are crazy idiots at best, or traitors working for Putin at worst. Because that has been done before, in 2014, in the Minsk accords. Putin wiped his bottom with that accord, and he will wipe his bottom again with any new accord. The definition of madness is repeating the same action and expect a different result. Seeing how things are going, my bet is on a total defeat for Russia. Time is working in favour of the Ukrainians.

  22. I guess the media & commentators are comparing the current counter-offensive with the autumn counter-offensives in Ukraine. But without understanding that we only knew about the autumn offensives after Ukraine had broken through the Russian lines. I.e. after the Ukrainians had been shaping the battlefield for who knows how long. We only saw phase 3 (exploitation) of the autumn offensive, whereas we are now following the offensive from phase 1 (Preparation).

It is especially satisfying to see the Netherlands giving more and more strategic stuff to Ukraine, when a Putin Puppet won the November election, and his coalition government started to govern over a week ago. The new secretaries of Foreign Affairs and Defense wasted no time in visiting Zelensky, they left for Kyiv 1 hour (!!!) after finishing the transfer of power (which includes several days of debates about the plans of the new government), assuring Zelensky of their increasing support.

On the other hand, we should not be afraid of Russian reprisals if someone destroys the Kerch bridge. There have been many attacks already on Russian and Belarussian soil by unknown groups or individuals, without escalating the war. Putin, and those around him, know the consequences of further escalation. Putin understands strength. He does not understand diplomacy.

I think the Democrats are more forthright, and they probably will allow more legal immigration into the country. But they definitely won't solve the illegal side of things, as you say. But making employing illegal immigrants a crime in itself is more difficult than some may think. Proving that someone is being employed is difficult when there are no contracts and only cash payments. You'd have to catch them in the act. That would require huge amounts of police officers to knock on doors and raid farms and factories. With a HUGH risk of corruption and payoffs to get forewarning of those raids.

  46. About the start of spring: there is the meteorological spring and the astronomical spring. The meteorological spring starts at March 1st, the astronomical at March 21st. This is also a thing in the USA, e.g. NOAA has a great article on it. From a military & sociological perspective, the meteorological period is most important as it reflects weather patterns. Who cares the nights are still longer than the days when the first flowers are out, birds are singing, the snow is melting, and the Russians are sinking in the mud.
