  1. Totally agree with your analysis. Especially with your bit about having everything to lose. Some argue that Putin needs an "off-ramp" to prevent nuclear escalation: as the Dutch say, "a cornered cat makes unexpected jumps". However, Putin already has an excellent off-ramp. He is a dictator with absolute power over the media, the army and the intelligence organizations. He can just call Victory, stop the war, and tell every Russian how great it was. He can stage a liberation of Kyiv. He can call in an actor to impersonate Zelensky being dragged around in chains or even executed. He can claim his forces destroyed all "satanic nazis". And then he can anoint his successor and retire to enjoy his riches, protected by his own private army. Putin doesn't need to win this war. He wants to win it, that is all.
