Macron made no effort to give up on Taiwan. He didn't say that. He said that we should be careful that the current pissing contest between China and the USA doesn't drag us all into a world war. He is probably responding to a group of USA Republicans & media that try to deflect attention away from the war in Ukraine towards tensions in the Taiwan straight, saying that China is the real enemy, not Russia. Which I agree is a very dangerous development. This is not the time to provoke China by acknowledging Taiwan more than we used to. However, it IS the time to show preparedness to defend the people living in Taiwan. Thus I do disagree with Macron, but I will not accuse him of "giving up on Taiwan". Because that is not what he said or implied.

@NickSteffen I think it is very sensible for Europe to invest (heavily) in its own military capabilities. I agree with Macron on that point. The possibility of the USA suddenly abandoning NATO if a Repuglian president is elected next year is very real and very scary. That is not tunnel vision. Also, that same group of Republicans and their propaganda media are giving far too much attention to the China situation, in an effort to draw attention and resources away from the real shooting war that is going on in Ukraine. That is because these traitors support Putin. Macron is worried that these people will provoke a war over Taiwan in order to help Putin, and I think he is spot-on.

Macron has been accused of courting dictators previously with regards to Ukraine. However, if you look at what he actually said and did, he is just keeping channels of diplomacy open, without compromising the status of Ukraine. There is a group of commentators who trigger at any attempt of diplomacy without understanding what actually happened, and/or who are very anti-French. France is unwavering in its support of democracy across the globe. Macron just likes to emphasize the rewards for behaving well, instead of the punishment for behaving badly. You can argue whether that is a fruitful approach with dictators, but it does not compromise world security. He is just playing good cop and lets the USA play bad cop. But he is still a cop.
