  1. About the start of spring: there is the meteorological spring and the astronomical spring. The meteorological spring starts at March 1st, the astronomical at March 21st. This is also a thing in the USA, e.g. NOAA has a great article on it. From a military & sociological perspective, the meteorological period is most important as it reflects weather patterns. Who cares the nights are still longer than the days when the first flowers are out, birds are singing, the snow is melting, and the Russians are sinking in the mud.
