Depleted Uranium is NOT the densest material on earth. That honour goes to Osmium. Even Tungsten is slightly denser than Uranium, as are Gold and Platinum. However, Uranium has the nice (for munitions) characteristics that it is pyrophoric, i.e. it burns readily when exposed to oxygen. It is also self-sharpening. This means that when penetrating a tank, it keeps a point longer than tungsten. Tungsten instead spreads over a larger surface (mushrooming). This gives DU greater penetration than Tungsten. When it has broken through, the Uranium bursts into flame, increasing the likelihood of igniting the munitions inside the tank. With Tungsten there are only the red-hot drops of molten tungsten & steel to cause fires.
