  1. My grandfather survived the war because he was deported as a POW. He was a Jew, but also an officer in the Dutch army. He thought in 1943 that being in a POW camp would not be as bad as being in a concentration camp. He was right. None of his uncles or aunts, nephews or nieces survived the camps.
