Suing your largest user is ALWAYS a bad idea. I had my doubts on the future of Java when it was taken-over by Oracle, but was still OK using it. However, this law suit changed that. I will not recommend the use of Java for any project. And I often work as SW Architect and get to decide the language to use... Instead, I LOVE and often recommend Python, C# is OK-ish and sees a lot more progress, but of late I have started getting into Rust.

That is because you mindlessly allow it to be like this. There are alternatives to Adobe, even Open Source ones. If you creatives started using these in earnest, and started giving constructive feedback, and perhaps a few donations here and there, their quality & usability would rapidly improve. And while you don't, they stay the way they are. So quit moaning and start contributing. That is how Open Source works. You give back to the community that gives you the basic tools, to improve them. Meanwhile, Adobe is treating you as you deserve to be treated for helping them perpetuate their monopoly.

No, it is not. Adobe has every right to prosecute you if you do. Piracy is a crime and immoral. You don't go steal a taxi because you are unhappy with their service. It would be FAR better if you started to seriously use Open Source tools to replace the adobe offerings and work with developers to improve them. Instead of childishly moaning "I really can't use the Gimp or Inkscape because its <whatever> is so bad". Take some responsibility!

@nifftbatuff676 One must first experience being exploited to appreciate freedom ;-)

Adobe being an excellent employer is completely unrelated to the way they treat their customers. But you seems to link these two issues. There is no reason why adobe could not improve the customer's experiences while staying an excellent employer.

"doesn't come preinstalled with much software" Most Linux distros have MUCH more preinstalled software than a clean Windows installation. And installing additional software is much easier on Linux than on Windows. A clean Windows doesn't even have a decent text editor, PDF reader or compression tool. Most Linux distros install a full office suite etc by default. So, that statement is absolute nonsense.

About patent trolls: they are filth. The worst of them use rubbish patents that would only come about under the lax, big-business supporting US rules. Like that troll that was abusing a patent on using a printer in a business network. The USA needs new rules for patents: that they can only be held by small companies (less than 100 people), and only if they themselves produce and sell an actual implementation of that patent. That would return patent law to its intended purpose. Which is NOT to defend the "rights" of huge corporations, but the small companies.

@endre4342 Normally, when your employer decides the tools, he will foot the bill for the subscriptions, so then there is no problem with using Adobe. As freelancer, you'd be free to decide your own tools, as long as the result is in an approved file format (e.g. PDF). Unless "freelancing" is a modern form of slavery where you live. Where I live, if the principal demands you use a specific tool, our IRS would tax them for being your employer. No alternative for Indesign? Are you out of your mind? Open Source software has been publishing books, papers and all types of other publications for half a century. And there are plenty Open Source GUI programs to do DTP. If there is none that suits your workflow, it would be relatively easy to adapt an existing program like Scribus. As long as you creatives put in the effort of giving constructive feedback.

There are alternatives to the adobe programs, even Open Source ones. If you "creatives" want to free yourselves, put in the effort to improve these tools until you are happy with them. Just cut out the childish "I could never switch to The Gimp or Inkscape because x y z". The tools are Open Source, if you are serious and took some responsibility you could contribute your insights and some good Samaritan coder would implement it -- if those insights amount to something good. Breaking the Adobe monopoly will save you loads of cash and make the world a better place. But without your input, tools that you find useful will not suddenly appear. Especially not if you are not going to use those tools anyway because you keep forking over a fortune to Adobe. Conclusion: Adobe is treating you as you deserve to be treated.

I did away with Windows when it decided to lock me out because it wanted to do an "urgent" update -- while I was giving a presentation to the CEO of a company we wanted to work for. That was in the Win7 era. We didn't get that gig, needless to say, and I have used Linux ever since. When my company decided to force Windows on all our laptops, I left that company. If you think M$ has improved its game, my wife had the exact same thing happen to her a few weeks ago on her company-managed Win11 laptop. Windows sucks.

Boeing is yet another example of how greed corrupts a company. With the assistance of the US government that allowed Boeing to cut corners in the development of its planes, e.g. by fully trusting the conclusions of Boeing's system engineers. As a result, they have dropped below the safety threshold and have lost some consumer confidence. It will be a a lot of hard work to regain it.

I have owned an LG, was a good phone -- until it wouldn't boot anymore. Not a boot loop, it just quit on me, a few weeks out of warranty. Now I use Nokia, and get them for the kids as well. Excellent phones for excellent money.
