There are two things I am looking for that would be a sign of hope for the UK: 1). The vast majority of the people being absolutely disgusted with the Tories and NEVER voting for them again. 2). The vast majority of the people being absolutely disgusted with the right-wing media and NEVER again believing a word they say, and NEVER again buying one of those rags unfit even for toilet paper. Until those happen, the UK is going to have a bit of a rough time.

One of the things that made Harry Potter so amazing is how Rowling nailed the behaviour of the British press in Rita Skeeter and her Quick Quote Quill. I really like the Dutch translation of that quill: The "Fantasiteer-veer", the Fantasi-cite quill.

Well put! Brexit was done, in spite of what Bozo and Frosty are saying. Time to evaluate!

@steviekenny581 When comparing democracies, the UK is probably the worst of them all. But still lightyears ahead of Russia. And fear not, as its corruption becomes obvious, I believe things will improve for the UK -- or its constituent nations.

@danrua223 PR would solve a lot of these problems. All "democracies" that have FPtP district-voting are in deep problems. However, as the Tories have so abused the British voters, only deluded people will vote for them. There needs to be a day of reckoning for the Tory party, as a sign that people are waking up to how they have been duped.

That is because the media landscape in the UK is much the same as in the USA.

I have never heard of the sunk-cost fallacy in the context of supporting a politician past his use-by-date. It is just that this is not an opportune moment to let Bozo fall, in the eyes of his party & handlers. But when that moment comes, IF that moment comes, they'd drop him like a ton of bricks and claim they were always doubtful of him, councelled against his past mistakes, and blame him for the wrongs in the country.

I don't think this will be the end for Johnson's government. If he were to resign, he already would have done so. No, he will just continue to ignore precedent & the code and carry on until he calls the next GE.

@ThePlaiibox The only thing wrong with the Labour party is that it operates like a party in a European Democracy, where there is Proportional Representation. But no doubt that is the influence of Putin, who causes the Tories to close ranks and certain Labour elements to create division.

You are very right to point out the evil spread by the rabid media. That is the real cause of Britain's decline: the poison that these rags inject daily into the minds of the Britons, and have been doing for at least three decades. The repair of the nation will start when these go bankrupt.

Putin is just a base kleptocrat who robbed the Russian people blind. Potentially, Russia could be a very wealthy nation. Instead, only a few select criminals have all the wealth. It can not endure.

Trickle-down economics is and has always been a lie. A disgusting excuse for unabashed self-enrichment.

@danrua223 Interesting ideas! My hope for the UK is that the current episode makes clear to everybody the need for reform. The big question I have is how to limit the damage these right-wing propaganda channels can do. As I see it, they have been preparing the people for Brexit for three decades, i.e. when I lived in the UK in 1994-1998 the rags were already spouting the most outrageous claims against the EU. The way I see it, media must be made liable for repeating outright lies no matter who the source, and must be forced to let their headline correspond to (or at least not contradict) the actual article. After spotting that a few times, I refused to read those rags even if they were lying in front of me, but I gather too many Brits don't do likewise.

Shocking how the Tories keep on about the evils of low growth, only then to implement policies that guarantee low growth for a decade.

You are very right in pointing to the media, who poisoned the minds of the Brits with their 3-decade long slander campaign against the EU. Deal with the Tories, but do not forget to deal with the media. They are even now starting to gaslight you, that they are not to blame for selling you a load of bullcr@p but that it was Cummings or BloJo or Fartage. The media must face the consequences for the responsibility they bear for misleading the public. That includes the BBC. There are dozens of "journalists" who should never work for a media outlet again because of the role they played. The tabloids need to go bankrupt or otherwise be closed down. And there are several billionaires that must be prosecuted for these massive propaganda campaigns. And their most favorite trick, of repeating a person who lied, must be banned. It must be illegal for edited / moderated media to repeat a lie when they could reasonably have known it was a lie. Same for having a headline that contradicts the conclusion of the main text.

"There are not very many old Etonians in journalism that you can have an intelligent conversation with" Ouch. That is a damning comment.

I would rather compare this to 5th June 1940, the aftermath of the Dunkirk evacuation. As Churchill remarked: wars are not won by evacuations. The divisions that Johnson created still persist, and are still milked by the rabid media. There are many dark days still ahead, unless major miracles occur.

Now we know what this renewed hullabaloo about breaking the NIP is about: it is purely noise so the MSM can report on something else than Partygate. Last week they had Beergate, this week the NIP, all to distract us from what is really important: Bozo and his clown circus are wreaking the country through lies, corruption and incompetence.

The big question here is how deep the UK needs to sink before people finally wake up to this simple truth: NEVER TRUST A TORY.

"The love of money is the root of all evil". The UK, the USA and so many other nations are being destroyed by GREED. Things will change when we start to measure a man's success by something else than his net worth.

I wouldn't put it beyond Patel & the gang of clowns to have come up with this law specifically to stop Steve Bray. Shows what pathetic misers they are. However, now that it is in the statute books, it will be abused whenever they like.

@danielleisabellabanyard9968 Rowling pointed out valid worries & warnings against being overly quick to accommodate trans women, without thinking through the consequences for people with two X-chromosomes. She is pro-women, not against trans. And I do not blame her, as she has been abused and knows women need protection from (biological) men. As you may not know, men have gained access to some women prisons by claiming to be trans women, only to then start violating the defenseless female inmates. That example clearly demonstrates how right Rowling is. It may take some time, but I am sure society will come to this conclusion that as long as you have a functional male member, you are a man, and if you went through puberty as a man, you have no business in women's competitions.
