@alandeweld3059 Perhaps that is one of the reasons for their swift retreat via Dunkirk? For the next 4 years, they did little else than defend their empire. Only together with the Americans + Canadians, and after strong pressure by Stalin, did they come back to the continent to put an end to Hitler.

You forget the outright betrayal by french leaders, e.g. the withdrawal at Sedan that caused parts of the Maginot line to be undefended. The general position was that WW1 had killed of a generation of french men (literally), and some did not want a repeat of that. Better to collaborate with the hun.
