So "literally every one else" is doomed to repeat the mistakes made in the past...

@frankpienkosky5688 A Republican criticizing me for quoting Scripture. Why doesn't that surprise me? The man was corrupt and suffered the consequences. You can do a 1000 things right, but that 1 think makes you a Law Breaker and deserving punishment.

More likely the turkish Janissaries. These were slaves who could not marry. They were not enuchs though, and were not sold to the highest bidder. For obvious reasons: it is not smart to sell elite warriors...

I hate this movie. I lived in Scotland when it came out, and saw the effect it had on the minds & hearts of the scots. A lot of useless anger and hatred was stirred up by it.

I didn't know Timor was split between two countries, so I learned something today. Bloody Portuguese making things hard for everybody!

Great video, but is there no part two? I am sure there is much more to say about the history that inspired this show. Like the Hadrian wall, the endless infighting between different houses in Europe, the Hashishi, the Janisaries, etc.

"The Devil had come for Salem" Yeah, in the form of a corrupt preacher. Those who preach fear and condemnation do the work of the devil, and do not know the Grace of our Lord. But the greater sin was by those who presumed to condemn these people on such flimsy evidence.

"what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs"

One reason why this show was somewhat less well received than Band of Brothers was (apart from the more disjointed story telling) that its score was less brilliant. The music often felt inappropriate or camp. Whereas the BoB score by Michael Kamen was magnificent. So sad that he had died by the time The Pacific was produced.

"The man of steel had cast a long shadow in life -- some even now are still under its influence to this day." Ain't that the truth. But there is hope Russia can finally turn that page in a year or two.

For interest, to understand why it could take so long to go round a small bit of land: the Bounty was trying to round the Hoorn from east to west. The prevailing winds are from west to east, so the Hoorn had to travel against the prevailing winds. Also, the winds are commonly very strong there, with extreme waves. For this reason, the journey to the pacific islands commonly took the route past cape Hope, travelling with the prevailing winds instead of against them. As the Bounty was set to circumnavigate the earth, I can not understand why this route was chosen. It would have made much more sense to go the other way around. Just like most sailing vessels do to this day.

Extra likes for The final Countdown reference ;-) I so need to get a copy of both it and Tora Tora Tora.

Even in the Netherlands, the word was that it showed the war from the japanese perspective. This made me never watch it on its re-runs and TV (I was too young to watch the initial release).

DR Evil THE reason the US army is (was?) so effective, is that it trains lower-in-commands to think on their feet and make their own decisions, within the framework of the objectives given them. THE reason the Soviet army did so poorly every time they were put to the test, is because of the strict command structures with promotions being made more on political grounds than on merit.

What modern blacksmiths call damascus steel has nothing to do with the real deal. The correct name is Pattern Welded steel, where the pattern is due to a folding, twisting and welding process. With real damascus steel it seems the patterns are due to specific impurities in the steel, which form nano structures that are the cause of its strength and sharpness.

I remember snippets of Live Aid. And the Queen performance. That was something else.

Good to remind us of the Imperial Japanese atrocities during WW2. We need to watch out for revisionism.

Well worth the wait, keep up the good work!

@moritamikamikara3879 Indeed. At some point they had lots of political power. Perhaps it is not so wise to have elite warriors at all..
