  2. For interest, to understand why it could take so long to go round a small bit of land: the Bounty was trying to round the Hoorn from east to west. The prevailing winds are from west to east, so the Hoorn had to travel against the prevailing winds. Also, the winds are commonly very strong there, with extreme waves. For this reason, the journey to the pacific islands commonly took the route past cape Hope, travelling with the prevailing winds instead of against them. As the Bounty was set to circumnavigate the earth, I can not understand why this route was chosen. It would have made much more sense to go the other way around. Just like most sailing vessels do to this day.
