  1. Even if the USA totally withdraws from NATO, the European states will still be more than strong enough to resist Russia. However, it would result in more Ukrainian casualties as the European states are not (yet) taking the situation seriously enough, that would take some time. But in the long run the main victim of an isolationist USA would be the USA itself. As you say, it was a backwater in the 19th century while being isolationist, and it would revert to that state again in the 21st century if it does withdraw from its alliances. Free trade & commerce made the USA great, and it became the global policeman to protect that free trade & commerce.
