Isn't this anti-constitutional? I always believed that MP's sit under their own authority, and are elected by their constituents to represent them. Not the party. In all other democracies I know, even those with proportional representation, a defector stays in parliament because once elected they have a personal mandate to represent those that voted for them. This should especially be true for the British MP's, where there is a direct link between constituents and MP. If the constituents are not happy with what their MP does, they already have a way to deal with that: they can write or influence him/her in any other way.
