Because there is no solution for it, except rejoining the Customs Union. If Starmer leaves it be, he can blame Sunak for the situation. If he draws attention to it now, people will (rightly) expect him to solve the situation once he gets in power.

@thegrandmuftiofwakanda You have no idea what a CU is, do you? A Customs Union is a region where there are no customs checks on goods traveling inside that region, because all goods are guaranteed to comply with all the regulations.

"A customs union is generally defined as a type of trade bloc which is composed of a free trade area with a common external tariff." The single market is what allows free movement of services and people inside the EU, which is definitely a bridge too far for the UK at this time. But the joining of the CU is what would avoid the checking of goods at the inner borders, as they are (mostly) so as to levy the right tariffs on goods. Free trade means vastly reduced Customs checks at the border. I'll be awaiting YOUR apology post haste. And I recommend you tune down the verbal aggression, especially when you are on shaky ground factually.
