They will. In 2014 (or was it 2015?) the EU will require financial services pertaining to the Euro to be located inside the EU, so that the EU can monitor and investigate them according to their strict rules, and so that the ECB can underpin the transactions. That will leave the UK economy absolutely gutted. They have given the affected companies a good period to make the necessary arrangements, then the hatchet will fall.

What a load of nonsense, mate. The Theresa May "backstop", that was a temporary measure. The NIP is here to stay until either Ireland unifies or the UK re-joins the Single Market and Customs Union. Or, theoretically, until the EU dissolves, which should have happened by now according to the Brexiteers, if you can believe them.

@tugpilotsmiffy Not so, my friend. You'd better read the documents: they are publicly available. If they were only temporary, they would have said so in the documents. Because it is the documents that get signed, not the words lying Tory politicians describe them with. So, unless you can give me chapter & verse where it says exactly that they are valid for 4 years or subject to a popular vote, I'd say, get used to the NIP. You will have to live with it for a LONG time. We warned you that it was unwise to sign these documents without proper scrutiny, which is why the EU delayed signing them for 3 months. But no, you had to trust Bozo -- probably the least trustworthy politician the UK has ever seen. Not such a smart move after all, was it. And now you are stuck with it. If you aren't happy with it, take it out on Bozo and Lord Fristy who did such a grand job negotiating it. And start begging the EU to allow you back in the SM & CU. Expect it to take some time before the EU will respond, it has more urgent things to deal with, and you will need to do some serious boot-licking and ass-kissing with the many nations you insulted these last 5 years.

These pissing contests usually end with a brief phone call between Bozo and a Brussels official ("Long, High-level Negotiations") where Bozo gets spelled out what a mess he is in. Bozo then loudly claims "Huge Concessions" by the EU, and behind the scenes Whitehall continues implementing the protocol. The UK government is all bluff and bluster.

To be fair, the British involvement in the Ukraine war makes for good photo ops that both the UK government and Zelensky take full advantage off.

The point at which the anti-NIP rhetoric gets tired has long been passed. Little Trust should tell us when she has actually done it, not before. I don't know how the EU would react, though. At some point, I think we will impose much stricter checks on UK goods, but the risk this poses now to the internal market is relatively small as the UK hasn't diverged yet that much. The French may be of a different opinion, and they are entitled to it, but I don't think the situation with the NIP is very high on the EU agenda. I think the measures to move the financial services from London to the EU will be a much higher priority.
