I have very little respect for CEO's, for this reason. They are usually not leaders, but managers. Companies need real leaders on top, people with a vision for the company, its customers and its workers. Not a manager who just tries to optimize current production without a vision for the future products. I have often asked a CEO for his vision of the future, so we could make decisions in training, hiring etc. Like taking into an empty hole. But they are very good at waffling about Shareholder value, ROI, etc. That used to intimidate me. But no more. But I greatly respect entrepreneurs and company owners. Those who do build their companies and lead them with vision, and have their own bacon invested in the company itself.

@CoralCopperHead Eye-roll. Owner-Directors are not under pressure to sacrifice long-term profitability for short term gain like CEOs are. Because their own bacon is in the game. Also their attachment to the people they lead is longer than 2 to 4 years, max.

It is NEVER a good idea to let a company that has a monopoly run itself like a normal business. It will invariably lead to underinvestment, reducing quality & service, and increasing prices. Which is why privatizing companies like Rail transport, energy grid, water & sewage, is such an incredibly dumb idea. We have Thatcher and Reagan to blame for this, they sure did the People a great disservice.

In my country, shareholders are one of the stake holders in a country. It is the job of the company's management to balance the interests of all stake holders, and balance short-term with long-term interests. But due to US indoctrination (movies), this is slowly changing. Thanks for pointing to Ford to see how a company should be run. I often do the same, especially for his quote that if you care for workers, workers will care for you. Instead, you now often see how companies who grow beyond the point where shareholders take interest in it, start to decline.

@andybunn5780 A country does not run on the huge companies that everybody is so impressed about. These companies contribute very little to the economy, and take a lot more than they give. Instead, an economy is mainly built around SMEs.

@arnehurnik They sure can compete, and very favorably at that! It is just that the competitors are heavily subsidized by the government. Meanwhile the public thinks Rail is subsidized. That is politics + bad journalism for you.
