"To train HGV drivers takes months." Correction: to train an HGV driver takes months. To train 100,000 of them is going to take decades.

Putin has lost his authority. The world is not impressed by childish behavior. "No, Putin-dear, you can not have that cookie called Donbas". "Now stop screaming or I will have to spank you".

It is time for NATO to DEMONSTRATE that it is greatly displeased by Putin's posturing with nuclear weapons. Through a show of FORCE. This is not the time to be timid: Putin respects force, not weakness. Weakness triggers him into aggression.

Excellent interview. Putin has placed himself outside humanity, and violated the trust that was given to him. Be conned once, shame on him. Be conned twice, shame on you. Putin can never be trusted ever again.

I pray for you that you will be able to live your life in peace without fear of fascist pigs. But they will not be defeated easily...

"The workers that made the UK strong have left for the EU. Now they will make Europe strong." Now that is a Brexit benefit -- for us.

I bet that one of the reasons why airliners avoid Russian airspace is to avoid being command to land an on a Russian airport by air traffic control and impounde.

Excellent idea. These are probably East-German left overs that don't really have a place in a NATO arsenal, and this is an excellent opportunity to use them as many Ukrainians will already know how to use them.

People forget that the UK has NEVER has a 12-mile exclusion zone around the Channel islands. Before joining the EU, the channel islands has a 3-mile exclusion zone. France is very right in not accepting this: their fishermen need to get those licences.

What the professor said about not having an incentive for continued production when losing money, is wrong. If production stops, it can not be started again because the pipes will have clogged up. So stopping production will mean a total write-off of the infrastructure & facilities even if relationships with the West were restored next month. That is why Russia continues to produce even at a loss. If there are no buyers, they would burn the fuel directly after production.

Weird attack. Obviously Russia will blame Ukraine, but it doesn't look like Ukraine had much to gain by this attack. More likely, it was done by Russians. But who, and why? I wouldn't be surprised if Putin is asking those same questions. But I also wouldn't be surprised if he already knows the answers...

May so many heavy weapons arrive in Ukraine that the Russian will not overrun any more towns to "cleanse".

While I respect what the USA has done for Ukraine up to last October, it is a shame that Biden has allowed himself to be so self-deterred. This is a situation where leaders of freedom need courage to stand-up against the bully. Perhaps it is that Biden never needed anything else than his brains to defeat a bully. But in this case, actual strength needs to be displayed. The USA has oodles of strength, but up to this far it has remain in the cupboard.

For those worrying about nuclear war, Putin will not use those except in the utmost need of self-defense. The Prigozhin episode demonstrated that he will negotiate first.

I always wonder why TV shows condensation towers when talking about CO2 emissions. Those clouds are NOT smoke but clean water vapour.

While most of the people thought Bush Jr's administration was a bit off the far end, comparing his operatives with those of #45 shocked me. The GOP of 2000 is NOT the same as the one of 2022.

Let's pray these women won't need to stand against a hail of bullets. The Mullahs have in the past used extreme violence to beat down protests...

@bradleysmith9431 The Jan 6 crowd does not represent the will of the People. Just a small, scared, religeo-fascist group who would do violence to end democracy. The exact opposite of the Iranian people who are trying to get rid of religeo-fascists.

I completely disagree with this weasel. Who is he, what authority does he think he has to disagree with Patreus? For one, if Putin attacks Ukraine with nukes or other weapons of mass destruction, it will be impossible to restrain Poland from sending troops into Ukraine. There will he HUGE pressure on the USA to do likewise.

"We don't want to fuel low-wages with immigration." So, you will need to pick your own vegetables, nurse your own parents, drive your own packages, slaughter your own pigs etc, etc.

@patricialongo5746 "Conservatives lead both nations through fiction" At least in the UK, that fiction will not last much longer.

There are several insurmountable problems with Russia's energy production. 1). The can not maintain their production facilities without western expertise. 2). Their wells and pipe-lines will become unusable if flow ever stops. 3). They do not have the logistic capabilities to move oil or gas to new customers, and won't have them for a decade. 4). They do not have the expertise to build new infrastructure without western help. Their energy exports only existed because of the West, and it will collapse without the West.

Many months ago, we had some insights into the Russian economy when a man living there walked through a mall. It was carnage. Prices were so high that people couldn't afford even the staple foods. When Putin declares his economy is strong, you know that it is in a state of collapse. Because he only opens his mouth to spread lies.

This is excellent news. Thank God these brave people are safe, for now, and Mariupol will continue to be a major drain on Russian troops as they need to continue the cordon around it. That will continue to occupy thousands of Russian soldiers, to prevent a break-out. This is a major defeat for Putin.
1
True, but "those without a sword can still die upon them". Pacifism is not the answer. Ukraine must fight or become slaves to Russia, with its people forcibly removed to Siberia and its culture destroyed. Russia is committing genocide.

I hope the women finally overturn this evil regime. However, they need leaders with a plan. The Iranian regime is very rich, heavily armed, deeply entrenched, with plenty of fascist thugs who believe it is their duty to oppress women. It is not likely they will go away without a serious fight. And as they are organized, they will defeat any unorganized rebellion, through sheer brutality if necessary. They can brutalize the Iranian people without any consequences for themselves, so they will. I am very pessimistic about the chances of these protests achieving anything.

At some point, Fox will need to be taken out of the air. It is actively driving a violent insurrection and spreading hate against the USA.

@safuwanfauzi5014 Peoples move and change composition. The concept of the Nation-State is only some 400 years old, which is pretty recent in European terms. You used to be loyal to the Lord who owned your lands, and he was loyal to some King, which could be a different king tomorrow than it is today. Germany has only been around for 150 years, before that Prussia was its own state. It was part of the German state for only 70 years, i.e. it has now been separate from Germany for a longer period than that it was part of it.

@juliane__ Well put.

General Hodges has consistently been right in his commentaries on this war. We should listen to him.

To grow the European chip manufacturing industry, it would be disingenuous to give subsidies to Intel, of all companies. Better to support companies like Bosch, STM and NXP, or a new company that will purely exploit the fab.

There is no way that Putler can hope to occupy and retain Ukraine. He doesn't have the manpower. He is fighting this war for no purpose at all except his delusions of grandeur.

RE: Not indicting somebody running for major office: This is absolutely baseless. For example look at the email server investigation for Hillary Clinton right before the 2016 presidential election. GOPhers claimed that her indictment was "imminent" mere weeks before the election, without any mention of any convention not to indict people running for major office. The GOPhers claim for themselves privileges they never give to others. I fully believe they have invented this privilege for this specific case, and are gaslighting the population into thinking this has a long tradition. It was certainly not a tradition in 2016. However it is very rare for someone running for major office to be indicted. Because most people running for major office step down immediately following any controversy for which they might be indicted.

The western weapons are called howitzers for how they are used (i.e. indirect fire), but they are built more like direct-fire guns with those extremely long barrels and large charges.

thulomanchay The Pzh2000 had their software HMI's translated into Ukrainian, which is one reason it took some time to deliver them.

It can be assumed that the infrastructure costs in Ukraine will be re-payed by Russia, e.g. through the funds that have been frozen. Also the Ukrainians will receive gazillions in aid after they win this war. Russia, however, has placed itself definitely outside the real of society, and will be a pariah state from hence forth, taken advantage off by those few nations still willing to buy its resources.

If the UN ever had a job to do, it would be to establish a DMZ around that power plant.
