Having good health insurance would make life so much easier and more secure for most Americans. As well as universal insurance for liability. In Europe, most people have both. Really makes a difference.

@alexroselle In those countries, there is no litigation to recoup costs, because the Law does not permit that. Insurers / health organisations are there to pay for the costs, not to determine liability or guilt. Also has to do with client privacy. No one has the right to question someone on how that person sustained an injury. That is not information those organisations need to know to pay for the costs.

Nor the phone booth lawsuit.

It is still absolutely crazy that she needed to sue McDonnalds to have her medical bill covered. We Europeans don't understand how the US can be so callous to people who get ill or injured.

@Buglin_Burger7878 Many of the comments you see here are from people living in nations that are just better and more humanely organised than the USA. We are amazed at how callous the "richest nation of the world" is to its poor and/or unfortunate. In developed nations, you don't need to beg in order to get insulin or a bypass, or litigate a boy because you broke your wrist. But rest assured, we also laugh at the UK for its Brexit disaster.

@haripetrov1289 Have a look in France. France has excellent universal healthcare, and they literally pay half (per capita) what the US pays for health care. That ends all the capitalist bullcrap arguments. It is cost-efficient to be generous, if you do it wisely.

@mel-ij2of It wasn't the hundreds of people getting hurt, but the hundreds of thousands of $$$ they had to pay in damages, to this lady and many others, that made McDonalds lower the temperature. That, and a direct court order.

The McDonald, the auntfromhell and the phone booth cases serve to highlight the need for a good health insurance system in the USA. Apart from paying more than double than any other nation for health care, the USA also pays a large price in unnecessary litigation and wrecked lives.
