The Intelligentsia were a tiny group, surrounded by benighted ignorance and an oppressive aristocracy. Hegelian nonsense taught them that the world had a flow (Essence) and to perceive it one had to be part of it. Russian thinkers believed in a great leap forward : it came in 1917. Anti-rationalism was rampant in the USSR (cf Lysenkoism). Gangsterism replaced Communism, but the spirit of Romanticism continued. The unfathomable nonsense of Putin is its latest manifestation.
