Honestly, I do think he is too old and really feeling it, especially after the assassination attempt. The whole interactions looked like when you sit with your grandpa. It seems pretty clear that they are just using him as a platform and if he wins he is just going to be an elderly figurehead that doesn't really do anything, but they carry on with their project in the background.
