Polygamy was a practice of the people, not the Bible, that God said he winked at because of men's ignorance. There are examples of the problems having more than one wife brings, so it's important to distinguish what was cultural and what was Biblical law. Some things were allowed, like slavery, but they were not to abuse them. Provisions were made for women in divorce if misused, yet we see in Christ's time he was against those practices. The most famous examples of polygamy's results are King David and Solomon also the verse "A man cannot serve two masters".
A deeper clarification is that marriage was meant to mirror Christ's relationship with the church; the groom and his bride and in prophetic language, a church is a woman. Faithfulness and being one is central, as it emulates the oneness of the Holy Trinity; separate but of one mind. Amazing Discoveries has a many series with deeper information and discusses on a very controversial stance that has historical context, that Islam was manufacture by the Roman Church. The 'why' to that is fascinating and alarming. Then again, they did create the Jesuit Order.
