I personally don't think Rommel was as good a general as he is made out. The Germans had access to Britain's moves and dispositions thanks to deciphering the Black Code the American military attaché to the British army used to send messages to Washington. After the code was changed in June 1942 the leaks ended and coincidentally so did Rommel's run of successes. Two months later an attack he launched at Alam Haifa was defeated before the Afrika Korps was all but destroyed at El Alamein in October. Until the codes were changed Rommel always had what the allies thought was a canny knack of finding the weak spots in the allied line and using his armour to break through there and turn the line, after that he didn't have another victory. Knowing your enemies strengths and dispositions is a massive benefit when attacking. Also, on a more personal level, Rommel was a rabid nazi and only turned against Hitler when Germans started to lose the war, I don't think he was someone to be greatly admired.
