  1. It's not really that old, introduced in 1966. For comparison... "Top gun's" F-14 came out in 1970 B-52 Bomber in 1955 U2 Spie Plane in 1952 Chinook Transport Helicopter in 1962 F5 Fighter Jet in 1959 Even the F15 is Only 10 yrs Younger released in 1976

  2. It has Propeller driven engines for durability. They often have to take off / landing on makeshift runways and a jet engine would need too much maintenance. The propellers also protect the engine intake for debris. Lastly this plane is meant to circle the battle field and support troops, I.E. slow speed / close air support. A jet engine probably would have problems flying so slow.

  4. The use of the 40mm since WW2 isn't that long ... The Gatling gun was invented in 1861... just been updating a great design. If ain't broke don't fix it, LOL.
