@matthewwatt2295 but these ‘vast profits’ that people talk about simply don’t exist. Take Cross Country as an example as it’s run by Arriva. The last full year shows a profit of £5.8m on turnover of almost £500m which is a tiny, tiny profit margin. The biggest cash cow I’d argue has been the rolling stock companies. By the way, Arriva bus is making huge losses.

@_CaptainCookie I understand the point about ownership….but my overriding point is that is very little, if any, profit in most rail/bus operations so the narrative put forward by some that boatloads of cash are being sent overseas if nonsense. As a further example, Thameslink/Southern/Great Northern in total reported a profit of £18.6m on a turnover of almost £1.3bn in their last accounts, another tiny profit margin.
