It hit an earth embankment, not a concrete wall. Either way, the crew came in too fast, landed way beyond the touchdown zone and the aircraft wasn’t configured for landing. They should have aborted the landing. As soon as they touched down so far down the runway, there was going to be a crash, regardless of the airport design.

It hit a mound of earth housing the ILS, not a wall. The real question is why the pilots didn’t configure for landing.

@ I doubt it - there was a perimeter wall to deal with after the embankment. Apparently the aircraft was properly configured for the first approach but a few minutes later it wasn’t. No properly trained pilot should forget basic tasks in any situation.

@ hmmm….which experts are they? Aircraft and concrete don’t mix

@ everything about the airport design is bad. However, that’s not the central issue here. The real question is why the aircraft came in fast with no landing gear or flaps deployed…..that’s what caused the crash.

@ you’ve no idea what decisions the crew made or why things did or didn’t happen. You’re purely speculating. We know the flaps and leading edges weren’t deployed, the landing gear wasn’t extended, and the engine that seemed to have a bird strike was still running. We know the crew returned for a second approach in a very short space of time. Nobody, including you, knows why any of that happened.

@ forget the wall. Focus on why the aircraft was in the situation in the first place.

@kr4ckle because I’m looking for the root cause rather than being blinkered by one detail?
