@ again, you churn out sweeping generalisations with no basis in reality. Rail investment in āthe Northā is at record highs, and the last Tory government signed off dozens of projects - wide scale electrification in the north west, pacer replacement, transpennine upgrade etc. By contrast, the previous Labour government gave the north virtually nothing but the disastrous āzero growthā Northern Rail franchise from which weāre still recovering today.
Railways will never take up the slack you talk of. They are best at moving large numbers of people, but most traffic flows donāt follow the route of fast, high density rail routes. As for domestic flights, again the scope for rail to compete is limited. Southampton to Edinburgh in 80 mins by air can never be matched by rail, for example.
Rail only competes city centre to city centre. As soon as youāre travelling from a suburb in city A to a suburb in city B, nothing will match the point to point nature of the car. Thatās why rail will always have such a small % of overall journeys.
