@ Hmm. Very selective memory you have there. In the 80s, the Tories gave BR sectorisation which produced much higher passenger satisfaction and ridership, an almost complete fleet replacement of the regional sector with sprinters, hinders of new networker carriages, East Coast electrification, Thameslink etc. The last Tory government invested more in rail than anytime since the 1950s. By contrast, the Wilson Labour government in the late ‘60s closed more rail lines and station than any other government. The point being that both sides have good and bad but are overall crap and we need new blood. Listen to Mr Parkinson from the Thatcher government - Tories don’t dislike public transport, just the public ownership of it.

@ again, you churn out sweeping generalisations with no basis in reality. Rail investment in ‘the North’ is at record highs, and the last Tory government signed off dozens of projects - wide scale electrification in the north west, pacer replacement, transpennine upgrade etc. By contrast, the previous Labour government gave the north virtually nothing but the disastrous ‘zero growth’ Northern Rail franchise from which we’re still recovering today. Railways will never take up the slack you talk of. They are best at moving large numbers of people, but most traffic flows don’t follow the route of fast, high density rail routes. As for domestic flights, again the scope for rail to compete is limited. Southampton to Edinburgh in 80 mins by air can never be matched by rail, for example. Rail only competes city centre to city centre. As soon as you’re travelling from a suburb in city A to a suburb in city B, nothing will match the point to point nature of the car. That’s why rail will always have such a small % of overall journeys.

@robtyman4281 what you really mean is I’m challenging you with facts and you don’t want to accept them so have gone down the route of a personal attack because you can’t counter the argument. Hey go. For the record, no I’m not a ‘Tory’. Both main parties are generally useless. However, I like to work with the reality of situations, not delusions.

@ oh dear. Still obsessing about me and ignoring the substance of the debate. With that level of ability to assess facts and understand nuance, you really should be in the current cabinet. It seems that nothing in life is black and white apart from your assessment of the UK rail industry 🤷‍♂️

@ That’s a distance of around 440 miles. Feel free to give an example of a train in France or Spain that could cover that distance in 80 minutes….thats around 340mph.
