  1. Over 28 years, 140 people tragically died trying to cross the Berlin Wall. Meanwhile, 7,216 people died crossing the US-Mexico border in the 20 years between 1998 and 2017, according to a conservative estimate by CBP (the actual death toll is likely much higher). In 2005 alone, more than 500 people died on the US-Mexico border. And of course the US is running privatized, for-profit concentration camps on its side of the border, where it separates young migrant children from their parents. The United States is exponentially more authoritarian and violent than the GDR was.
