  1. Quite a bit of this video doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I know of a case where somebody was flying a recreational drone near fort Hamilton in Brooklyn New York. She was not in controlled or restricted air space. Some bozo from the fort used a jammer and caused her drone to crash. Then they detained, interrogated and held her for a long while. The lawsuit against the government is ongoing.

  2. Because of the length of the cells and the tight tolerances, perfect alignment needs to be maintained while they are lowered into position. This is nearly impossible when the Crane is on the donor ship because there's no way that 2 different ships can be locked together as one. I think the solution is to lower the cells on the deck of the recipient and then use a Crane on that ship to pick it up and put it in position, In the module. Now I'm interested to look up the TRAM system to see how that's designed...

  4. It's practically impossible to guess what the requirements would be because we don't know anything about the drones. The regular drone regulations that almost everybody seems to think would apply are for small unmanned aircraft systems, less than 55 pounds. Government aircraft fly around busy areas all the time without transmitting ADSB

Whether it was this NASA project or something else there are many reasons why they might do it at night but one simple reason is to encounter less air traffic and to make it easier to avoid flying directly over people or moving vehicles on the ground. Depending on what regulations are flying under they may be prohibited from flying directly over people or moving vehicles.

  21. @Mongrel214  Just saying that for a long time the white balance on these sandboxx videos has been very blue. Recently it seems to be less blue, but still not quite right. A number of things could cause a camera to record with a color bias one way or another. In this case, one possibility is that the set is lit with incandescent lights (regular light bulbs). These are normally very yellow, like around 2800° Kelvin and would make the whole scene yellow. If the camera is set for automatic color balance it would try to compensate and shift the balance towards blue. Some things would appear close to neutral and other things would appear pretty blue. Another possibility is mixed lighting. There might be artificial lights on set but an open window letting daylight mix in. The areas with the daylight will be much bluer than most artificial lighting (except flash). My studio strobes have modeling lights built-in which are calibrated to 3200k. The modeling lights can be used to shoot with if you adjust the camera color balance for 3200. When using the strobes in flash mode the modeling lights are automatically switched off as the flash fires so that the lighting color is not mixed. Something similar can happen with auto exposure. If you take a picture of something that's mostly all black the camera will likely try to compensate and make everything lighter, because it doesn't know that the picture is supposed to be all black. Snow scenes often come out gray, because again, the camera compensated not knowing that it was supposed to be a mostly all white photo.

My point is that if they don't train a lot it's not a trained skill. It's nothing more than unloading your ordinance to get a pat on the back and a safe ride home.   41.  @JudgeDillon  Because the designers of the stealth plane and tactics thought of that and have come up with design features and pilot tactics that make it ineffective. I don't understand the details well enough to explain it well. Here's a super basic explanation... To start with, getting a missile into the sector means the missile system would have to be able to figure out where the airplane was and which direction it was going and then hope it didn't change direction. Even if they could achieve that, then trying to get it close enough to lock on with an infrared seeker would be difficult. The exhaust from those planes is mixed with cold air and dispersed widely (among other things) to reduce its heat signature. On top of that the aircraft has flares with a much greater heat signature to confuse missiles. On top of that, missiles don't have an unlimited range. If you make life difficult for them, for a while, they run out of gas and fall to the ground.

Legally speaking, 6 miles inland or 6 miles offshore is the same thing. Without checking I'm pretty sure that US customs and border patrol operate within 100 miles of the border.

  52. I think it would have been good to define "dog fight". What exactly is "close range'? Is a fight with missiles still a dog fight or are dog fights only with guns? Either way, I think that the prospect of a close-range fight will always be there. As Alex pointed out, the visual ID requirement is always a possibility and if the other plane shoots at you while you or conducting your vid pass, you my friend are in a 🐕 fight. if somehow you get jumped by somebody else at close range, you are also in a..... ?

I've been under the impression that it was a new Patriot missile battery but there seems to be more and more talk about f-16s. Would they have been given amram extended range? Would NATO be assisting them to with awacs and growlers? Are they limited to whatever gas they take off with or are they being tanked? Who's tankers? Etc, etc, etc Thanks!

But what I'm thinking is that operating those is similar to trying to be a power user at 10 different programs like Photoshop, premiere, Excel, access, word, TurboTax, QuickBooks, etc. And not only be able to use them but use them simultaneously, while under a lot of stress. I've never tried it so I'm only guessing but it seems like something that most of us wouldn't be able to do very well.

  72. So the Kinzhal is an old, medium range, ballistic missile with a kit added to make it somewhat maneuverable, resulting in a pretty fast, slightly maneuverable, medium range cruise missile. Yes? Kind of like a JDAM kit for an old dumb bomb. Why doesn't the US have them? We did in the 60s but couldn't find a good use for them so they weren't Mass produced. Turns out that slow, cheap cruise missiles flying 50 ft above the ground can usually get the job done just as well at a fraction of the price. As air defense systems have improved over the years there may be an emerging case for various types of hypersonic cruise missiles and glide vehicles. You can bet that the US will have the best, if they are in fact needed.

  86. Here's my take on it now that I've watched this video and the other one on the task and purpose channel. We bet the fate of the mission and all those personnel on trusting the Russians. We left those guys vulnerable. They were pinned down and outgunned and we couldn't do a fucking thing about it except call the Russians and hope they answer the phone. The US wasn't willing to send in the air assets until they had asurance from Russia that they wouldn't be shot down. If Russia didn't take our call and cooperate we were leaving those guys on the ground to die there because we weren't willing to conduct sead/dead. On a side-note, everybody should note that Ukraine has been fighting the full force of Wagner & the Russian military for a year-and-a-half without significant air support. Without much air support or enough ground based weapons systems Ukraine is attacking dug in Russian defenses... and succeeding. From my perspective the situation that led up to the battle in this video is not something to be proud of. Our people on the ground fought excellently but they would have all died if it weren't for the grace of Russia. This was a total failure of leadership and not something that I feel proud of. The way Ukraine has been fighting Wagner, Russia, the Chechans, etc is something to be proud of for anybody who's made any kind of contribution. To be fair though, Ukraine didn't respond well enough to the early warning signs that the attack was imminent. Their leadership totally effed that up however since the attack began they've been outstanding.

With so much more capability coming online in the near future I think we can afford to give Ukraine something better than the oldest airworthy F-16's.   104. I agree it's widely believed that dog fights are a thing of the past however I disagree. There are scenarios where American planes will get pretty close to potential adversaries. If they identify an adversary while within that close range we have a dog fight. Modern missiles might become so good that you don't have to get behind the bandit to shoot him but we're not there yet. Maneuverability is also very useful if you need to evade a missile. Stealth aircraft are supposed to avoid that scenario but their capability in that realm isn't perfect

I think that we might see North Korea attack South Korea, China attack Taiwan. and Russia attack Europe while Iran caused a war in the Middle East.   113. Based on Alex's description it's very unlikely that these were "commercially available assets". I'm not aware of any drones in that class that can fly a 100 mph or for that amount of time. There is a hybrid gas-electric drone that can fly long and far, but it's bigger and slower than what Alex is describing.

  124. @jimashtube  Your outlook presumes that both are trying to avoid each other. However in the case of somebody pursuing a drone they may intend to collide with it or attack it in some other way. In that scenario it makes perfect sense to make yourself less visible.

  125.  @jimashtube  Unless they're flying information there's no good reason 41 aircraft to be approaching another in that situation. If your aircraft is being approached like that in the dark by an unknown aircraft you can assume they're up to something nefarious and take measures to be a more difficult target.

  127.  @LondonSteveLee  The only reason everybody is not buying F- 35s to fill their entire fleet is because they need some other aircraft that carry more weapons and are faster/cheaper to produce. The f-35 production lines have been at maximum capacity and will remain there. They cannot make them fast enough to fill orders. Every complex machine that takes years and years to develop is somewhat outdated before it's finished. The f-35 is less outdated and more capable than every other aircraft flying. The only other aircraft that comes close to the f-35 is the even more "outdated" F-22.

  128. If the West thought there was a real chance of Russia nuclear escalation they would help Ukraine win the war before Putin has a chance to escalate. Imagine if Ukraine had nukes. The West would be bending over backwards to help them win without using the nukes. If Putin invaded Alaska would the Americans just hand it over to avoid escalation or would they fight with everything they have?

  129. It's been a very long time since the "find out phase" was displayed. If we want anyone to respect that possibility we need to show that it still exists. When China did collide with one of our military aircraft and forced it to land in China, I don't remember any "find out phase" that came from that. There are no more red lines. The US has become a paper tiger with a sore throat...

  130. Lol How are they gonna make sure that somebody's drone has RID when that person doesn't want to be identified? RID is stupid, useless for threat mitigation and invasive to legal remote pilots. The only thing that RID is good for is identifying dumb Americans who go buy a drone and don't learn about airspace regulations.
