  1. I agree it's widely believed that dog fights are a thing of the past however I disagree. There are scenarios where American planes will get pretty close to potential adversaries. If they identify an adversary while within that close range we have a dog fight. Modern missiles might become so good that you don't have to get behind the bandit to shoot him but we're not there yet. Maneuverability is also very useful if you need to evade a missile. Stealth aircraft are supposed to avoid that scenario but their capability in that realm isn't perfect
