"It didn't start a fire because it was cold." A meteorite or anything else doesn't need to be hot to start a fire, it just needs to damage a gas and or electric line. Later in the video Scott goes on to make this same point. Just a little self-contradictory, eh?

Why does the cone quickly dissipate as the plan continues to accelerate?

Does the ultrasound penetrate the weld or just look at the surface?

I just watched the video about the Russian forces massing around Ukraine and they mentioned SAR imagery. Not knowing what that was I searched for it and found this video. Now that I hear synthetic aperture I recognize it from aircraft weather radar. After watching the video it struck me that SAR imaging is a lot like photogrammetry with thermal imagery emissivity values for different objects sprinkled in. I guess it makes sense because whether we're taking RGB pictures or even just looking at something we are practicing detection and ranging of the visible light spectrum. Photogrammetry takes those pictures and very similar to what you described about SAR, it computes a point cloud of accurate shapes removing parallax and other shortcomings of the detection and ranging system. LIDAR, RADAR, SONAR and FLIR are basically all observing electromagnetic returns off of objects and computing their positions. All kind of the same thing just working in a different wavelength. Much more complex but not that different than what the SR-71, U2 and commercial terrain mapping aircraft did and still do with film or digital RGB sensors.

@scott Manley and videos like this one remind me of a professor I had in the Imaging and Photographic Technology program at RIT in the 80s. Dr Andrew David hazy was extremely impressive, and he still is... 🙂
