I keep trying to explain this phenomenon, and although easy to understand, it's hard to put in writing. It's basic human nature. It will ALWAYS come down to TWO SIDES. Just like any sporting event - the top two end up competing against each other. In politics, the top two most popular "sides" will end up competing against each other in the final vote. Most voters have realized this (decades ago), and pretty much ignore the fringe parties, knowing they will never gain enough support in the final competition to win.
Perot DID cost Bush the election! I wish Perot could have won. I liked him. But the fact is, no (or very few) people on the left - read Democrats - would vote for him when they had a full blown Democrat to vote for, so most of the people who voted for Perot WOULD HAVE voted for Bush had they not had the option of Perot. It's really simple and basic, and true. Perot took many Bush voters away, while leaving Democrat voters to their side. So their side won.
It will happen the other way, too. If a "third party" left leaning candidate comes along, its most likely he will take away many vote from the Democrat nominee. Thus, in the final competition, the Democrat will have less votes than the Republican.
