The whole situation is really messed up. I dont understand how the government can tell a homeowner he cant demand a tenant pay rent on his house but at the same time, demand the owner pay taxes on the property - which more often than not, come out of the rental income. The city will still give fines for trash in the rear alley and tall grass, and expect the owner to pay them. But the owner cant expect the tenant to pay to live in his house. Maintenance and emergency repairs are a whole additional thing - how can an owner pay for a new roof, new A/C or furnace, or an emergency plumbing repair when he hasn't received any income for the past year? A lot of landlords do it as a second income/investment, so dont really qualify for business covid relief grants or whatever, nor can claim unemployment insurance benefits. Contrary to popular belief, landlords have quite small profit margins, often times times none at all if expenses hit.

@harleymitchelly5542 Yeah, I wasn't really commenting/complaining on the recent ruling, but just how things have gone down this past year and a half. At this point, it's a moot point. The damage has been done.

@edwardjmayer87 You didn't really ask a question, but I'll answer your point. What happens when the landlord (owner) doesnt pay the taxes or doesnt make repairs and gets repair orders/fines, is that the municipality will put a lean on the house and it will go up for a tax sale (auction). Then some investment conglomerate will win the house in the auction and the original owner loses the house and has bad credit now. So that is the answer to your "and?" question.
