  2. Because they are the modern incarnation of the "liberals" of the 60's that started the movement. They want to "liberate" the country of "conservatism". Conservatives want to "conserve" what this country was founded upon. They want to conserve the morals, rules, beliefs, traditions, and ideas the majority of this country had since it's founding. Liberlas, since the 60's particularly, try harder and harder to be liberated from those rules and traditions. It used to be foul language, drug use, long hair, promiscuous sex, uncleanliness, anti-work, and dare I say, communist (as in hippy communes). Once they achieved their liberation from the norm in pretty much all those categories, they naturally "progressed" even further, and took each category to the next step. Those early liberals have gained so much ground over the decades, that todays conservatives are basically at the point where the liberals started in the 60's. Todays conservatives are just trying to hold on (conserve) the point we're at nowadays, while the liberals are still trying hard as can be to break free from every single restraint this country and society has. They are still the "Liberals" of today. They STILL want to be "liberated" from the rules and restraints of normal, established society.
