I recently read a short synopsis of the private/public, monopoly, etc.. issue written by some lawyer, and it was really interesting. I wish I had copied it. I forget where I found it, and could never find it again if I tried. It basically brought up points that Twitter/Google/et al claim to be private entities when criticized about such issues as discrimination, unfair practices, etc..., yet they claim to be free, open, public entities whenever someone tries to hold them accountable for the actions of their users. Evidently, they shouldnt be able to claim both. Either they are a private company, in which case they can block, ban, promote, whatever, anyone they choose to, but they can also be held liable for their published content in some cases. Or, they are a public company, and are accountable to all the anti-discrimination laws all other businesses must abide.
I dont know all the rules, and I probably didnt explain it very well, but that short article I read was really interesting and thought provoking.
