"Thank you for your wars - said no country ever" .......ummm, you better think that over again, or read up on some history. then go ask all the people that hitler, napolean, stalin, & numerous other countries, plus the animals in the middle east, WOULD have killed, enslaved, or simple taken over countries, had we not had wars. throughout history, MANY people have thanks us, and other nations, for 'our wars', since we saved them!
and regarding your comment about the money part, what good would it be to spend all that money on a decent railroad, just to be invaded by russia or china, then have their govt forbid interstate travel??? or have islamic terrorists blow it up every day?

phillyslasher I do know how rr's work, just as I know how corporations work. And how unions work. I guarantee you, if the rr got rid of unions today, whatever workers they have will make more than min wage, more than 10$, I guarantee it. That's just the propaganda pro-Union people must say, to justify their existence.
I'm not against you, I like trains, the railroads, their history, and I appreciate the jobs the workers do, from the entry level manual laborer to the veteran engineers. It's just that I see what damage unions do.
I worked for a legacy airline for 17 years and saw how the unions operate, how they condition the members to never do anything beyond the contract, never work any harder than necessary, never show that you can produce a little more because hey, they might not open up that extra position!
I also saw the union thugs come down out of Pittsburgh to "persuade" us how to vote during our many strike or near strike negotiations. And yes, they looked and talked just like the stereotype!!

there is much more to our argument than you are understanding. Europe is a bunch of small, but crowded, countries quite close to each other. The citizens do not value personal freedom or responsibility as much as Americans do. They seem content to depend on Government for everything. Fewer people own their own car, and for the ones who do, often it is very small, gas is extremely expensive (as are all other car-owning costs, even a drivers license), most roads are very tight with little parking in the cities.
American citizens strive for our independence and personal freedom. We all want to be able to go where we want, when we want to. Most of us dont want to be crammed into small city centers where we walk, bike, or use public transport for everything. We like to spread out, live away from the congestion, have large houses with large yards (gardens).
For that extra $500 per month in taxes and 4x the price of gas, we would rather forgo the govt-dictated train routes & times, and simply buy our own car and travel as we want.
This is not a knock on Europeans, just pointing out the differences in how we live. It's not just a case of us being 'ignorant'.
* "It's literally the stereotypical ignorant American response of "Government is bad, freedom!!!" and ignoring any other viewpoint.
Lets take one stupid comment at random. +rcdny You realise that the far better European systems discussed work on the opposite of what you're saying is best? The US is in this place because of it's lack of government intervention in the system."*
