Retirement time was 60 years old and avg. man life span was 61 years... now read again his comment about "a wonderful childhood (free from monetary concerns and violence and excess sexualisation or envy)" => in USSR a kid that sniched on his own parents and ended up in a child care home after they were arested was sold to the Soviet kids as a big hero and a rolemodel... You can take google maps trip to Russia and visit smaller cities and found out homes made out of wood that did not have any renovation for 70+ years -> and trust me you do not need any degree in civil engineering to tell that this is the case... and in the same time you can hear here all the official stories about rapid development in USSR -> in 90s people were literally starving as everything stoped working and world was not interested inbuying all the super obsolete things that Soviets were producing... Even designing something like a car was too much for USSR -> legendary Lada 2101 was an Italian Fiat design -> Fiat 124R... UAZ-452 produced to this day? Jeep FC Double -> in 1965 Jeep made decision that its to obsolete for the west and in that exact year production in USSR started(can bet that with production line purchased from Jeep for half the price).

@cogoid "for the 50th anniversary of Sputnik launch, and it was really bizarre to see in those documents, how much technical detail were in the reports sent to the top levels of the government, and what kinds of things were passed down back to the chief engineers." because there was something like 4000 German engineers deported to USSR, all the lower level engineers and technicians of Wernher vor Braun -> according to the official truth they were doing "something else" in USSR... That is why you have this strange very specific communication betwen "politicians" and Soviet politburo and in the same time for another 60 years Moscow hardly changed its rockets and now have no chance to be a competition for Space-X...

Seriously." because even something as simple as production of rivets was a hard task for central planed economy and whole huge projects were stoping to full STOP because there was no way to produce/deliver rivets... There is even an example of that in book "Behind the Urals: An American Worker in Russia's City of Steel" by John Scott, Factories in USSR were build by American companies with help of American engineers but Soviet engineer could not explain(or even inform) its American coworkers that Amazing USSR is unable to push that project forward because of rivets or in that case lack of them. There is exactly this type of situation described in that book and Russian guy was doing everything to not tell the truth and in the same time he was already sentenced for sabotage(as people above him would not admit that they failed -> ofc that the project is not finished because of some evil sabotage by some hostile to communism indidual -> all executives in the end were ending badly(no matter what). Also i would not believe that this "engineering degrees" were earned by hard work/education -> guy that was examing this people could try to not give them a pass from any subject but that would most likely not end up well for him... John Scott gonna give you much nicer inside into the situation than official sources that were used for creation of well prospering country. And all the official reports about growth that are the author of the video was happy to repeat were exagerated -> you need to cut that numbers by half(at least)...

@Digo-eu His comment is actualy very clear and informative... complete oposite to your comment. You only agree with him on the only one thing that he failed to analyze -> China growth was fully powered by private investments of western companies -> now when they leaving China, China is in trouble and just recently 1.3 million of Chinese workers emigrated to Vietnam as "evil western companies" relocating its investment out of China and into China neigbours... I personaly like Aleksander Fredro "definition" of socialism "Socjalizm każdemu równo nosa utrze. Bogatych zdusi jutro, a biednych pojutrze... "(Socialism mess up everyone equally. The rich will be crushed tomorrow, and the poor the day after...) -> That Polish peot died in Lviv in 1876 and somehow got better understanding of the socialism than you with all the internet access and books avaible to you in XXI century...

@cogoid "by Victor Pekelis and Nathan Kobrinsky" -> "-is" at the end of the family name can tell you that it is Lithuanian surname and in the case of "-ski" that is a Polish family name... Also as a Polish i can explain you that name -> its created from word "korba"="crank"(in english) and "rukoyatka"(in Russian).

USSR was trying to copy preaty much everything that USA was doing so where is the surprise? That first N device tested in USSR that the video is mentioning was an exact copy of American device, the factory that produced was also an exact copy of American factory, when they got satelite photos of that Russian complex the inteligence officerse were shocked that even the shape and relative positions of building was exactly the same as in Los Alamos...
