Early versions of the Pentium clocked at 60, 66 and 90 MHz (P5 5V) had a problem with the floating point unit, which in rare circumstances reduced the accuracy of some calculations. This problem, discovered in 1994, was a major source of embarrassment for Intel, which finally agreed to replace all defective chips with corrected versions. Intel knew about the problem but covered it up until it became public knowledge... And my 486DX4-100 was only few % slower than Pentium 60Mhz... The whole "3d games" change came later with introduction of completly new Penium MMX as it was providing some real boost that was used in games. I think that only Dungeon Keeper was the only popular game that required Penium CPU to work and that game was published in 1997, then there was MMX and era of 3D accelerators(first as an extra card that was cooperating with your GPU)...

@paulmichaelfreedman8334 I was buying my first PC in something like 1996 and Pentium CPU even then was sold with premium price so i made decision to buy 486DX4-100 that was exactly 1.5X of 486DX2-66 as it was using 3x33MHz. 486DX with 100MHz was doing 90%-95% of Pentium 60 speed and the price tag difference betwen them was huge. After few years of DX4 use there was like one game that was requiring Pentium CPU to use it and anything else was working just fine. People that are selling electronic stuff always pushing you the newest stuff with premium price tag and 99% of times you are paying for something that will be needed 5+ years later and only in very limited aplications.

" Pentium opened the world of multimedia" Nope, the CD-ROM opened era of multimedia and my 486DX4-100 was doing fine without pentium CPU. The real change in the topic of "multimedia" came years later with completly new version of CPU -> Pentium MMX...

@oldtwins I remember playing Quake I on 486D4-100 with zero problems... and Pentium 60 got similar computing power in games but was significantly more expensive in 1996... I remember like one game that wanted Pentium to run it and everything else was working fine on my PC...

@paulmichaelfreedman8334 I think you are dead wrong and 32mb of RAM would be the most expensive part... i think my 0.5GB HDD got similar price as a single 4mb edo RAM stick...

Doom on my DX4-100 was working fine and it got similar computing power in games as Pentium 60 that they were showing here... When this video was made DX2-66 was avaible and it was also doing OK in Doom.

I was using DX4-100 and it got similar performance as Pentium 60 but it was much cheaper. I do not think that DX2-66 would be faster than Pentium 66 during typical use.

Despite the very negative press (partly due to the fact that Intel knew about the problem but covered it up until it became public knowledge), very few people took up Intel's offer as the chance for the error causing noticable issues was low."

@medes5597 Funy how you all ignoring the fact that they are showing XT clone and 386SX and babling about voice recognition and AI... and the demo for them is a game without any 3D graphic in it...

@derek20la I got 486DX4-100 and i was playing MP3, if i remember it was having some issues with very high sampling rate but at that time everything was compresed to super small sizes so it was not an issue.
