You have competly no idea what are you talking about. Speed of that bullets was poor... any armor able to protect you from modern day 12-gauge shotgun slug would be also able to protect you from "first rifles" "heavy bullets"... You would need some XX century 12.7mm armor piercing amunition to do what you are describing here...
