For instance imagine that you're bitten by a snake, your blood is all of a sudden filled with clots, with a leech and a blood transfusion you'll have a higher chance of keeping that limb that was bitten then otherwise. The blood leeched from the limb helps freeing up space for new blood to enter, and the leeches are pretty good at dealing with the clots. Without them you might not even have enough bloodflow for the antidote to reach everywhere in time... Oh, and they're not the only creatures used in modern medicine either. Lots of stuff is great for eating away dead tissue that might otherwise cause a lot of issues...
