@samson-tc That's not necessarily a option. Remember that the EU isn't one country with one ethnic group. We've had starvations in the past, and no one country wants to risk being entirely without local production in case things go bad abroad. For instance imagine a blight or something making Ukrains harvest bad, all of a sudden we'd be without food of our own and would have to ship it in from outside the EU causing havoc on the rest of the world food market. Or a economic crisis cutting purchasing power of a country without enough food production to be self sufficient... You get the idea... Here in Norway we still remember the food shortages of the Napoleonic war when Britain blockaded our coast and we where at war with Sweden... And WW2 wasn't exactly a dance on roses either... We've never grown enough food to fully support our population, but leaving what little we have unused definitely doesn't help in that kind of scenarios... And causes anxiety... Other European countries have similar concerns if perhaps with less severe starting conditions... Every European country doesn't have to be self sufficient with every crop type. But we generally want at least some minimum production level to fall back on... As for the producers... There farmers are often a serious political force to be reckoned with, making ignoring them hazardous for anyone that wishes to remain alive in politics...
