Yeah, this is a big deal and not at the same time. It's 1% of Icelands population that's directly impacted. But that's because Iceland is small and a tiny town make up that 1% No other settlements are affected however.

Animals and people where evacuated before the last eruption, unfortunately during this one some sheeps are still stuck and some cats are stuck and some missing. People had to flee at short notice this time and couldn't get all the animals away in time. :-/

People are perfectly safe. But livestock, property and peoples livelihood is a different matter...

Yeah, they are. Unfortunately some pets and livestock are not yet as people had to evacuate on very short notice this time.

Don't underestimate Icelandic people. They managed to slow down the lava in the seventies with sea water saving the harbour back then, and they can do the same again. They just need to bring in the equipment to do so. Nature is powerful, but we humans are not without agency, neither when it comes to climate nor geology. The wall that they erected managed to reduce the amount of lava that would reach the town despite failing to stop it entirely. And the amount of lava on the south side of the wall might be small enough to be possible to combat with water still.
